It would have been a dream come true to get the Apple Store in Lakewood. the store's footprint is small enough that it would have easily fit into one large or two store fronts in Lakewood.

It is an anchor/destination as any Apple owner knows.

Crocker Park is nice and close but I wonder if the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce ever approached them? Of course I wonder if they asked Micro-Center to move into the old Giant Eagle? Or...?

While some laughed at the idea that a city filled with designers and work-out-of-the-home peopple could add to a city!!!! Lakewood's Ned Hill has proposed just such a thing for Cleveland to save them. With as many deisgners, programers, network people at work at home it would make sense to me to start to cater to some of these businesses, and bring in businesses that support those efforts.

Apple Store an anchor store?? Maybe a destination for the few and the proud but hardly an anchor. It would have fit nicely in Lakewood, though, that I agree.

an·chor store (plural an·chor stores)
noun
Definition:
major store in shopping center: a large retail store such as a department store that is a major store in a shopping mall and is intended to attract shoppers who will patronize the smaller stores

Yet, when Target or Kohl's or any other major department store is suggested the argument against is that the anchor store will steal away business from the existing businesses. I think it's fair to say that some do not want an anchor store believing that the anchor refers to pulling down local retail rather than providing something to build around. Maybe the term should be changed to cornerstone.

Good idea we will change the name from anchor store and maybe the store owners will never notice!

Here is the problem faced in Lakewood, not North Olmsted, Westlake, Bay or most other westward cities. Lakewood is built out. This is why the idea of the peninsula made so much sense. 100-200 more acres to build on.

Eveything else has to handle the buyout of built property, and then make more in taxes than what was there, and be as versatile. Housing is very versatile, and make good tax money.

Apple, while Mr. PC Phil Florian(thanks for stopping by) does not see Apple as an anchor, it is, especially with only one other at the time. It brings in people from all around, and competes with no other store in town. Win, Win.

Jim,
Seems you are already changed the definition of Anchor store and while you're at it have pinned additional expectation on the Chamber to do what the Planning and Development Department has listed in their mission statement (attract business to Lakewood). I wonder if others have as difficult a time following discussion when a whim outweighs the accepted definition. Then again this is the age of indifference that doesn't know the meaning of "is" so discussions might as well be futile exercises that don't require adherence to standards such as accepted definitions.

From my years in the business, and anchor store is one that is one solid, two bring in people that hopefully will shop in other parts of the area or mall. I do think Apple, fits that bill, as does the post office.

While I am sure you are more than willing to wait for the Plaining Department to do everything, I generally feel that the Chamber's business is to promote business, help business, and promote in our case Lakewood as a great place to do business. I see them as a tool of not just Lakewood business, but of the City of Lakewood who pays into the program(s).

FWIW

For those that are curious, it's going in next to American Eagle. I, for one, will be there opening day, for Apple tends to give out cool stuff every time they open a new store.
