Today I learned that Ellen Malonis has passed away, after a long fight with cancer. Ellen was one of my favorites in this city. My friendship started almost 4 years ago when she stepped in and stopped by the office to talk with me about my beliefs in religion.
From that moment on, Ellen had been a spiritual adviser to me. We would talk for hours on the phone, through emails, or she would stop by the office when she felt up to it. She had become a near and dear friend.

It is with great sadness that I must share one of our staff members has passed away this morning.
Ellen Malonis, who worked as the Educational Assistant at Hayes Elementary School (Grace Extension site), passed away this morning after battling a prolonged illness.
Many of us not only knew Ellen as an employee but also know her children who have attended or are still attending Lakewood Schools.
Arrangements have not yet been announced.

Deeply saddened
Observers,
I am so very deeply sadden to hear of the passing of Ellen Malonis.
Ellen has been a good friend of my family for 30 years, as she was a friend and graduated from LHS with my younger brother Skip.
When I was first elected to City Council in 1987, Ellen approached me about establishing a recycling program in Lakewood, as few communities, including Lakewood, had one.
Councilman Ed Graham and I established a citizens recycling committee, with Ellen as Chair, to research establishing a Lakewood recycling program. After months of meetings and hard work, Ellen and her committee successfully implemented the City's first recycling program.
More than any other single person, Ellen is responsible for the very effective recycling program the City enjoys today.
Just this past week our recycling program received an award from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District for our outstanding recycling efforts.
Also this past week, the City of Canton completed their analysis of our recycling program as they want to use the "Lakewood model" in their recycling operations.
Despite all her efforts, Ellen modestly shied away from taking credit for the hard work she did in this area as well as in other projects in which she played such an important role.
Our citywide condolences go to Paul and the family as she was truly a Lakewood treasure.

I first met Ellen when our children entered the GT program at Grant Elementary. From the first I was impressed by her ability to question without criticizing and always see the big picture. Since those days we have been in and out of each other's lives. I'll always remember how special her smile made me feel each time we ran into one another over the years.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and I grieve that we have lost such a remarkable woman.

I never met Ellen. However, I have always been extremely proud to say that I live in a city that has a recycling program.
What a great legacy. My sympathies to the family.

The Schroeder family is deeply saddened by Ellen's passing and sends our heartfelt condolences to the Malonis family as well as the many friends and acquaintances of this brave woman.
I met Ellen as a fellow parent of students at Hayes Elementary, but really got to know her through her posts on this forum.
Ellen was passionate about the causes she believed in, but was always open to listen to an opposing viewpoint. Through reading each other's posts we got to share some of ourselves that we might not have without this forum.
I enjoyed seeing her daily last year as I picked my son Trevor up at the Grace Extension of Hayes.
I will miss her smile and the joy that was always in her eyes.
