Turkey Harvesting Opens with a Bang

Most people don't realize that money collected from hunters has been invested into conservation. Turkey hunting is the fastest growing wildlife "sport" in North America largely because of a money that have been invested in "cannon trapping" and relocating turkeys into area where they once were essential extinct. Now Wild Turkey are everywhere--including in Lakewood.

The logic behind the late April start of the Spring Gobbler Season is that the Gobbler's (males) inseminate multiple hens by this time. Since too many turkeys may mean not enough food for turkeys and deer (both eat essentially the same thing), there is a need to control the population through harvesting.

Being out in the woods at 5:30 am covered in camo and watching the woods come alive is one of my most favorite experiences with nature. I also enough sitting with my coffee in the "Wood" watching the sun rise and seeing Lakewood's nature come alive.

Even if most of the volume is feathers, that looks like quite a substantial bird to me.

He was 19.5 lbs with a an eight in beard.
