Vacant hospitals make for great movie sets!!

When I read this, I was at first concerned they were filming here due to similarities to Detroit, but when I saw the draw in Lakewood for the film's location manager was the hospital I breathed a sigh of relief. As he said, “Hospitals are hard to come by and tough to pull off because live hospitals can’t accommodate filming for obvious reasons.”

Now it all makes perfect sense to me. The mayor's plan was brilliant. Perhaps more buildings can become vacant to accommodate film crews for a couple of days. As planner Sylvester says, “It’s encouraging to us that we have an environment that film scouts find attractive. In Lakewood, we continue to build off of our successes. This film is just another example of that.”

Oh? What constitutes this environment, where did it come from, and in what way are we building off of it?

Perhaps the attractive environment is related in some way to this:

…in the mid-90s a group of officials from the US Dept. of Interior visited Lakewood. They were in awe of the city, so much so they wanted to designate the entire city as a National Historic district.
Lakewood, they said, was among the last pristine turn of the century street car suburbs. A few neighborhoods in Philadelphia and Brooklyn retained the turn of the century charm and character, but none the size and condition of Lakewood.

That was 20 years ago, though. I wasn't here at the time, but my impression is that, whatever "score" Lakewood had in this regard then, it's likely been falling since.

For a number of reasons, we declined to proceed with the designation, but many of us at city hall, based on ongoing feedback from the residents, got to thinking that maybe our city's future lay more in restoration rather in demolition and destroying the original charm of our architecture.

Does that thinking describe the direction of Lakewood lately? Maybe the opinion at city hall has changed; maybe it has changed based on changing feedback from residents, even. I don't know.

I do know that if the contemporary practices in Lakewood really are "building off our successes," it seems like they must consist of something other than historic heritage.

I could not spare the time to read the "OneLakewood.com" website link you posted (owned operated by Mayor Cosgrove).

Is there any mention in CCF subsidiary's OneLakewood.com website as to who will get the money from the rent for this supposed windfall for the city?

Since the facility is leased to CCF/LHA, I would assume that proceeds, if any, for the sublease would go to CCF, not the City.

But then again, written lease agreements in Lakewood are rarely followed and the words have spectacular hidden meanings that are the opposite of the words us ordinary folks see on the printed page. We are just not that bright of an electorate.

No worries, we have the 2015 Crain's Cleveland Business Smartest In House Attorney/Law Director "Cosgrove" Award Recipient, Kevin Butler, to "interpret" the lease for us--he can turn black into white and back again or......with a couple of thumbs stroked on the "Delete" key on his keyboard, he can make pretty much anything not happen.

Spend $2.5 million lying to us, and then suddenly tell the truth?

How does Gary do that? Oh yeah!

While it is great fun to watch movies being made, it generally indicates the lack of taxes they pay to the economy, and what the economy pays them.

States take turns offering Hollywood breaks. Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania for 3 years, then cancel it and Ohio, Kentucky, etc.. for a couple years.

I found this out during my time on the Marvel Avengers set.

How much damage are they going to allow during filming? We are still the landlord after all. Will they require them to repair damages or use it as an excuse for demolition?

The hospital is absolutely beautiful. It is spacious with a vast amount of natural light.

I would love the opportunity to share with the film crew how our city government gave away our hospital and the $34 million dollar charitable foundation so that a wealthy few could profit and a large population of underserved would suffer.

Given our governments transparency record, or lack there of, I would really like to know what privileges have been granted for damages? What privileges for a hospital with a pending tax-payer lawsuit? Justice will be served... we are patiently waiting. Hopefully the film is non-violent & they understand a little bit about it's history & the current fight many constituents still hold with our government.

Until the lawsuit is settled, why not bring back Law and Order Criminal Intent? The writers would certainly have enough material to work with from right here in Lakewood.
