Jackie,

It is important to ensure that your can is not blocked by a car parked on the street. In order to avoid this, it is best to place the can in the driveway apron (if you have one) or as close to the apron if possible. In the absence of parked cars blocking the can, I cannot explain why it was missed. It would be best to call (216)-252-4322 if it is missed again and see what they tell you. Of course, you could always take a picture of it when you put it out to document that the cart is placed properly. They generally come back if they miss you however, provided it does not become a habit.

Back to the good stuff, this "move-out" tree lawn sat out all weekend on Cranford, from Friday to Tuesday:

I place my can in the middle of my driveway apron, cars can't park there, I have to move the can to get out.

I have not posted to this thread in over a month. Therefore, I figured it was time for an update, if you want to call it that. Things have not changed. In fact, this past week appears to have been somewhat of a "trash explosion".

Then again, it is the beginning of the month, which is the time when everyone gets evicted and empties their entire house onto their tree lawn and moves onto their next place.

Actually, this is not the only occasion where this happens. People that have lived here for years and years are now breaking the law on a regular basis.

The question is: how are we to end or at least reduce these occurrences? I can drive through West Park, Cudell, and other suburbs and might see one or two early set-outs at most. For that matter, I have seen less over on E. 118th off of Kinsman.

Fines and tickets are simple. Apparently, too simple for the mayor and his administration. First, we would probably need a commission of five or ten friends, an outside consultant hired for a few hundred dollars an hour, the mayor and his commission discussing the issue over a few (or ten) cold ones, and, you get the picture.

Again, I encourage all that have a problem house in their neighborhood to call the following entities:

1. Lakewood Division of Refuse and Recycling: (216)-252-4322 or e-mail refuse@lakewoodoh.net
2. Mayor/Public Safety Director Michael P. Summers: (216)-529-6600 or e-mail mayor@lakewoodoh.net
3. Lakewood Department of Public Works: (216)-529-6800 or e-mail pubworks@lakewoodoh.net
4. Your ward and/or at large councilperson (s).

Actually, it would be best to get an e-mail to at least one of the above entities, as it could create a paper trail and written public record.

Had I not realized that my eyes were playing tricks on me, I would have thought that the "Deck Patrol" was out in full force recently. :D Even if they were out, that would have said more about the mayor and City Hall than me! :D

I think I've asked before Lori, but when you write "bed bug infested: uncollectable" - how is it that those items are supposed to be removed? (Aside from the fact that they are out on the wrong day.)

The mattresses are supposed to be wrapped in clear plastic. If they are out on the tree lawn without this clear plastic cover, they cannot be collected due to health and safety reasons.

The solution for this issue is simple:

When an unwrapped, infested mattress is spotted, the homeowner needs to be sent a notice giving them 48 hours to remove the infested mattress front he tree lawn. If the mattress is still lying out, infested, after 48 hours, City Hall can easily call an exterminator to come treat the mattress so it can be collected. Then, the homeowner can be fined/invoiced not only for the early set-out, but for the exterminator charges as well. If they do not pay the fine, it can easily be assessed on their taxes.

Perhaps this is why there is a bedbug epidemic in Lakewood. Actually, it is bordering on a crisis. What do you think happens when these infested mattresses lie out on tree lawns for weeks or even a month? That is how they spread. Under my above-proposed, very simple solution, mattresses would rarely lie out for more than 72 hours.

Speaking of which, I believe this is going on week three of this bedbug infested mattress lying out on Hopkins:

Since I believe the Ward 4 Councilman reads the Deck, I would like to respectfully request that he look into this issue and see that it is rectified. If I see the mattress gone soon, I will gladly post so here on the Deck. It is on the west side of Hopkins a few houses north of Franklin. You can't miss it. It is also a known problem house: domestic violence, loud music, etc. The landlord is from Medina County and owns several other rental properties in Lakewood.

It is easy for those of us that this issue does not effect to shrug it off, but nobody would like seeing this on their street for three weeks.

would burning be the answer? Or hazmat, EPA, how do you get rid of infested filthy contaminated discards? If you cover it in black plastic, wont the sun raise the temperature inside the wrapped item that it would kill whatever is nesting inside? and at the same time, hide the hideous demon from public view. until Hefty Hefty Hefty or Glad, come up with a contractors bag, big and strong enough to contain the offender, were left with the tree lawn.

I can see a business opportunity, some kind of Fred Sanford truck drive around daily and pickup the offenders property, for a fee, $10, $15 or $20 dollars a pop, times 25 pickups a day, I can see potential profits here. Not for me, too old, but anyone else?

The city of Lakewood should step up to the plate, hire Lakewood's youth from the football team, all sports to do the task, provide them with protective suits, and let them release some of that bursting energy, gather all that trash, charge the property owner, fund the high school sports teams, make money for the kids, get rid of the junk, everyone wins. there are solutions, but no one can see beyond there noses. But we all see the problem.

Put me in charge, I'll run the program and clean up the city like that actor, who said, "Make my day" done. First we need all the necessary permits, then we need a truck with a lift attachment, suits, gloves, face masks, 4 strong kids, the calls come in from residents, we go there and pick up the crap, photograph the junk, the address, the owner gets a bill, drop the junk off at Lakewood dump, and hit the road again, 4 kid X's $15.00 an hour X 4 hours = $60,00 each kid for 4 hours work. total $240,00. 25 pickups fee to owner $25.00 = $625.00. less the kids pay, the city makes $385.00 per day. times 5 days, almost $2000.00 a week. 5 days a week, almost $10,000. in a week. I'd be happy to get rid of my junk for $25.00.

My question..how do you know they are infested with anything? Do you get up close enough to look. If you do, then you have a chance of having a "critter" get on you.
I have thrown out mattresses, couches, chairs etc that were not infested but because I bought new. I refuse to pay extra for the take away fee. I pay over 8 grand in home taxes a year...they can haul my junk.
Now if only I could jerks to stop blocking my driveway or where I put my garbage so the garbage men can actually do their job, that would be better.

Hi Missy, I don't get near any of the stuff, just replying to other comments posted here, also I assume home trash less likely to be infested than apartment trash, but just assuming.

Out and about today, I found that streets throughout Lakewood looked very clean, very clean indeed!

With the exception of a few early yard waste bags and a few wayward cans (which I can live with), everything was virtually spotless.

A big thanks goes out to everyone that made this possible. That includes the mayor if he intervened in any way.

Keep up the good work! :D

I've only been here 14 years, but I'd agree. It's a nice looking city.

It has been a long time since I have done a “trash dump”. I suspect Mr. Summers thought he had buried this thread for good, or put the final nail in its coffin.

Believe it or not, I would very much like to bury this thread. Unfortunately, I am unable to do so, as Lakewood is still a mess, in my humble opinion. This week has been especially bad, with numerous early set-outs, often more than one on a street.

Mr. Summers frequently boasts how great Lakewood's housing market is. I would remind Mr. Summers that if people wanting buy houses drive around Lakewood and see nothing but garbage all over the place, nobody will want to buy a house here. I sincerely doubt Mr. Summers would want this legacy of his to go down the tubes.

I'll be very curious to see what next weekend is like with the holiday. I'm sure with it being the end of the month, some will honor the fallen by emptying their entire houses onto their tree lawn and leaving it.

Mr. Summers! This is your chance to shine! Get the streets cleaned up by Memorial Day, and maybe, just maybe, you will get a complimentary post here on the Deck. I'm sure the first thing you want right now is to actually look good for once!

Come on Mr. Summers, eye of the tiger! Stalk that garbage in the night! Don't get scared! :D

Although I'm giving Mr. Summers the ability to right his wrongs, I'm sure some of the Deck Watchers will either:

1. Blast me
2. Bury this post
3. Derail the post
