Congratulations to the Presidential Scholars and their respective support systems on their achievements.
It always amazes me as to how many of our Lakewood High students go on to great personal and professional heights. We will be eager to monitor the future achievements of the latest two.
I recall conversations with the late Dr. Madak regarding academic success in Lakewood. He and I agreed the measure of a school system Is NOT the achievements of those young people who are expected to achieve, but rather the successes of those who came from difficult home lives and who lacked the support and resources to achieve. As someone who has three generations participation in the Lakewood Public Schools, I cannot count the young Lakewoodites who I know that came from difficult home circumstances, who were educated and nurtured in the Lakewood Schools, and who went on to become standouts in their professional field whether it be law, medicine, business, government, entertainment or another profession. At another school in another city, the same achievers might not have met such success.
Dr. Madak liked to point out that Lakewood High School, even though it sends a lesser percentage of its graduates to college than other high schools such as Bay, due to its size actually sends more graduates to college. And due to its size, the Lakewood High School provides an enormous number of options and extra curricular activities. I also can't count the number of wary parents who transferred their children from other schools to Lakewood, only to be very pleasantly surprised.
I recently had breakfast with an 80 something retired Lakewood High educator who fondly recalled his years at Lakewood High. He asked me if the Lakewood Schools still had something called "the Lakewood Mystique". Yes, indeed.

Here's a slightly different twist on this. Tom and Gary have so accurately pointed out the uniqueness of Lakewood Schools.
You've heard the phrase "pay it forward".
I'd like to congratulate these recipients with the phrase-- "You've payed it backwards."
A lot of us quietly and every day try and set the circumstances so that all you "kids" can go out there and kick it!
