I don't know why the mattress sat out; I don't know how long it sat there. I don't know how long it took someone to call refuse and recycling or whether they saw it and acted on their own.

I do know from experience that this is a responsive department, as recently demonstrated by their actions during the pick-up day change. They know how personally every citizen takes refuse pick-up and will regale you with stories.

We missed the first pick-up on the new day. This was our fault because for some reason, we didn't expect them to arrive at 6:30 a.m. - we were accustomed to the old pick-up time. We were not in the habit of actually using our garbage cans. We'd just collect everything on pick-up morning and put it out. They came out early on that first new day and we were unprepared.

We could have simply taken our bag to the recycling center or left it in a garbage can, but instead, we called (after hours, mind you) and asked someone to come and pick it up. The next day, there was a cushman there to get our bag. It was driven by an old friend and LKWD resident and I was happy to get a chance to chat for a few minutes.

He had a list of homes to visit, because residents had called, and was busily fulfilling those requests. He reiterated the awareness of how much importance people place on refuse pick-up.

Another member of that department is a friend who grew up in Lakewood but no longer lives here. This is a person who still deeply cares about the city. That's one person we look forward to seeing.

Another old friend works for the department and I see this person when I go to the recycling center, but I also see this person in C.E.R.T. (the Citizen's Emergency Response Team) activities. Another Lakewood resident, this city employee is ready to volunteer time, if needed, in case of an emergency to Lakewood citizens. There were a number of city employees who have volunteered with the CERT program.

There's always going to be some problems with refuse collection, particularly left by tenants (sometimes you just don't schedule your move the night before pick-up day), but I think it should be a good neighbor policy to call Refuse and Recycling when you see stuff. We could all be a bit more pro-active.

While we've had fun in this thread, there hasn't been any balance. I do understand that no department is perfect and not everyone has had the same positive experiences with this department as we, but it does bother me that there have been no words of support for people who do a job that few really want to do.

Every now and then things don't work the way we want, but I think for the most part, R&R does a fantastic job.

The R&R department are good people and many are close friends. I do not expect a R&R man or a city official to pick up a solied mattress on Sunday morning. However...

Sitting here I could make the flowers 1,000 things, and the mattress another thousand. All are legit.

Let's say the flower basket is backyard trash pick-up, and the mattress is take it to the curbs trash collection.

The flowers could be a plan, and the mattress no plan.
