Jim, it is important to dispel this myth. More VOTES were cast in "American Idol" but not more people voting. You could vote multiple times in "American Idol". So more people vote in Presidential Elections but more votes themselves were actually cast for American Idol. According to this article, people voted multiple times consistently for "American Idol":
