Will Summers Allow Another Lakewood Landmark to Be Razed by CCF Developers?

Post by Lori Allen _ »

As we all know, the CCF-controlled Rockport Square LLC is building new condos on the south side of Detroit between Winchester & Hopkins.

There is an old Lakewood Fire station on Hopkins just south of Detroit, it is on a parcel of land that the City of Lakewood sold to Rockport Square for $0 in 2005 for development. Rockport Square then bounced it around and sold it to themselves a few times.

This is a picture of this fire station form 1928:

Can anyone confirm whether or not this was sold as a public asset or behind closed doors? Can anyone confirm whether or not Summers is going to allow the CCF-controlled Rockport Square, LLC to bulldoze a piece of Lakewood history or if it will somehow be preserved?

Thanks. Below is a satelite shot of the lot (highlighted in red). The fire station is at the southeast corner of the highlighted lot.

Lori

I do not have an answer, but I know that Rockport Developers have been using that as an office since before they broke ground.

I might be mistaken, but they completely cleaned it up and refurbished it before starting.

Jim,

Thanks for the information. Hopefully, they will keep it standing. It is a wonderful piece of Lakewood history.

The property was transferred from the city to the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in 1991 they used the building for costume storage and repair. in turn the Shakespeare Festival sold the property to Rockpirt Square developers. The building was used as sales office and had been decorated using many historical photos of Lakewood.
