Can anyone explain the bicycle lock thing? Seems to me that's a crime deterrent device.
Someone should forward one of these sign pix to the Daily Show. They'll be broadcasting from the West Side this week. Plus, there might be a few more Lakewood peccadilloes that would fit into their coverage.

This is wacky. So if I have a 5' 11" chain separate from the lock, that's okay? But U-locks, which near as I can tell don't have any value as a weapon, are not okay? And who, besides we denizens of the Internet, are going to take the time to read all that?

Looking at this excerpt, what is the difference between a "bicycle locking device" and "locks attached to a bicycle"? My head is starting to hurt thinking about all this. Forget it, it will all be over in a few days.Corey Rossen wrote:Dan Alaimo wrote:To paraphrase: if you take away parks from good guys, only bad guys will have parks.

Some of this is obvious, some ridiculous, and there are some things I never would have thought of. But a glaring omission - by law - is openly carried guns. Without that, the rest of it only serves to upset law abiding citizens and provide that nice handy checklist to others.

I think they are saying that you can lock up your bike, but you can't walk around the park carrying any kind of a lock. It makes perfect sense to me. Dan, if you can't imagine how to use one of those heavy ULocks as a weapon, then you aren't trying very hard.

I was speaking with Michael Gill about this. Mike and I used to work on Great Lakes Courier a biking paper. His answer was, "do a search for bike thief retaliation" and you will see hundreds of cases where bike locks were used as weapons very effectively.todd vainisi wrote:f you can't imagine how to use one of those heavy ULocks as a weapon, then you aren't trying very hard.

Regarding bike locks as weapons.... I wasn't gonna go there but now I am. Give a bike chain to Man A and a reasonably sizable U-lock to comparable Man B, and I'll take Man B any day. And while you're researching "bike thief retaliation" per Mike Gill, also check out "U-lock justice." Or I'll save you the time. U-lock justice is typically doled out on the side view mirror of a car, not a person. And it's very effective....

Okay. I buy your point. Now will somebody buy mine that these signs are ridiculously detailed and almost unreadable to the casual park goer? I saw one person start to read one of the signs, shake his head and walk away.
And to Jim's point in titling the thread, it's a hell of a welcome mat.

In it's clumsy overbearing way, it's the culmination of all the other signs that litter what is otherwise a beautiful park. Whenever we have guests from out of town, without any prompting, they always comment on the amount of signage at Lakewood Park. That layer upon layer of authority, that pressing need to inhibit and control which in the end is so much more emblematic of Mike Summers than any Soltice Steps basking in the Sun.

Dan
That is it,it is the optics. We all heard how good this is for Cleveland and surrounding communities. Yet as we are slowly finding out, if you are on the wrong side of the fence...

... you are out of luck.
From NBC News - Behind the RNC Barricades Cleveland Soul Food Restaurant Loses Business.
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/behi ... ss-n613261
At some point it would be interesting to understand how this fell together.
We all love Cleveland and Lakewood, but you have to be prepared and ready for your big close up. Half of the storefronts from East 4th - Playhouse Square are empty.
There are cages and an over abundance of law enforcement. Which was thought to be needed and luckily it was not. But this is not who we are.
So we get someone from the RNC, jogging into one of Lakewood's Parks and sees a sign with a ton of rules. Do they know it is temporary? Or that Lakewood is a police state?
The footage shot at the convention, and on East 4th street by national media seems positive.

I think a big thank you should go out to all the law enforcement persons that came to help. One of my relatives was here all week helping out. I believe that the reason why we have to have so much law enforcement present is because of the idiots that now think it is OK to assassinate cops. I fear for them, as our president has taken away a lot of their riot gear. I believe Rudy Guiliano said in his RNC speech, when you need a cop, they don't care what color you are, or what nationality you are, they come. People need to realize that BLUE LIVES MATTER!

One of the nicer laid back aspect to the RNC Convention so far is that many people are stopping to thank and talk with the police. It would also seem the police who were assured they would come up against things they have never seen or could believe, are happy it has been laid back and respectful.

Couple after doing a selfie with police.

The photo of the police chief, came from him walking with his around around this protestor...

... while saying to him, to paraphrase, "Son you keep walking east on this street, until you realize this was a bad idea, and that you then go home."
At a time when all police are on edge, and rightfully so, it has been great to watch the interaction.
