The fireworks travel about 100 feet for every inch in diameter of the tube. This can be varied by changing the length of the tube. Lakewood uses shells from 1-6 inches. We eliminated the 8-10 sizes years ago due to changes in the fireworks laws and increased cost for those size shells. The site is set up to maximize the safety for the crowd based on NFPA Codes, state law and review of fireworks accidents that resulted in injuries to spectators. I'm probably picker about site set up then many other people because the first show I was involved in with Lakewood FD went off on the ground and resulted in audience participation which is always a bad idea when using fireworks.
Scott--- speaking of that show you mentioned that went awry was one of your pyrotechnic partners Lakewood Firefighter Dick "Boom Boom" Kerr?
Stan Austin
That was a little before my time when the firefighter set them off and hit the pick up truck. The laws have changed so much since then. 9/11 had an impact on how our fireworks displays are done the shipping of the fireworks across state lines and the importation have all been impacted
My nemesis for fireworks had been the show in 1982 that went off and injured 22 or so spectators. Since 1990 when I started over seeing the fireworks it has been my goal to not see that happen in Lakewood I love the fireworks and the great day in Lakewood my only goal is the safety of everyone there.
