Kate McCarthy wrote:Although this quote is from a book on how to protect yourself from violence, it really resonated to me as relevant to the current state of our city.

“We must learn and then teach our children that niceness does not equal goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction; it is not a character trait. People seeking to control others almost always present the image of a nice person in the beginning. Niceness often always has a discoverable motive.” The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker

So if you stumble upon the "nice" Lakewood community page, consider yourself warned.
This is a great post and I really wanted to bump it.
Whenever I think about how Lakewood is governed , I think of those Apostles of Niceness- Summers, Madigan, Siley, Pae, Beebe, who's only refuge is decorum and a smile, having long ago forfeited any claim on truth and transparency.
I picture them in the " For the Greater Good " scene in the movie 'Hot Fuzz". Huddled together ( not in the woods, like the movie) but in that broom closet City Council calls home. Chanting ... For the Greater Good....For the Greater Good....For the Greater Good.

The Buzz has been particularly quiet. They used to be jammin.

It would be hysterical if it was ever revealed who some of those posters are because I suspect there are several City Hall types and some people who would be pretty embarrassed to be "outed."

I'll bet that dozens of lawsuits could be filed if the people are outed--but then again, there might be only one defendant in all the lawsuits.

Brian

If that's true, then the only solution is to out them all.

Hey Jim,
The movie is "Hot Fuzz" by the same guys who made "Shaun of the Dead".
Enjoy the weekend but remember... The Greater Good...

The Buzz has been totally dead recently. All the formerly talkative, albeit cray cray posters have become suddenly quiet.

Scampering into the woodwork to remain hidden? A good housecleaning would shake that place up!

Mr. Buckley has unique talent for telling the truth with humor.

His "Greater Good" post above surpasses his earlier "thought oncology" post.

Please recall that Bleed Lakewood's Jim Kenny sought to "cure" us of our "cancerous thoughts".

Mr. Buckley coined the innovative "thought oncology" wellness treatment plan--only Lakewood Ohio have such a treatment plan.

So let's all celebrate Father's Day thinking "happy" thoughts about the "Greater Good" that is just around the corner with our "Big Daddy" Summers his "Thinking Big."

Perhaps through "thought oncology" we can all feel a "thrill going up our legs" when Summers speaks of the Greater Good of "downtown economic development" and "changing healthcare"

How interesting that since early June, when a lawsuit was filed against the Observer, the Buzz has come to a screeching halt! No more anonymous posters bashing Jim, the LO, and Essi. How remarkable!

Where did they go?

Wake up Lakewoodites, your anonymity is about to be exposed as subpoenas are threatening to reveal who you are!

Let's discuss! Should anonymous poster's free speech and identity be protected or should we pull back the curtain on everyone and let the chips fall?

What say you?

Seems this lawsuit is asking that anonymous posters' identities are revealed. I haven't been on the buzz since my one and only encounter with that nasty site years ago and cleveland.com.....feel like a need to take a shower after dipping into that cesspool of comments.

I feel there should be some protections for people who are speaking truth to power but in this situation..I don't know. Hate that it seems people owning their words might be more vulnerable than people hiding behind fake names. If certain posters are continually attacking a person not in power, I think their identity is up for grabs.

It's a double edged sword, isn't it?

The idea was that an anonymous name might protect you from the repercussions of speaking your mind.
Dissenting political opinions, especially, could be expressed without fear of reprisal.

Yet anonymity also allows for the malevolent reprobate to operate unchallenged, assuming multiple identities and creating havoc.

Those of us who post here, using our real names, have seen this play out, with some being targeted and harassed for voicing opposing opinions.

Meanwhile, anonymous sites are filled with attacks and innuendo and the author could be a city official, a "prominent citizen," a school board member, virtually anyone.

That's why the unmasking of posters on the Buzz could be VERY interesting. Some of the people posting there would be horribly embarrassed if their identities were revealed - their comments might not match their "nice" public personas.

I'm with you, Kate. I haven't posted there since the West End debacle- too may creepers. I still recall when a prominent citizen, still active in the community, accidently outed themselves late one night by forgetting they were still signed in under their "nasty" posting name and posted their "official" line under the wrong name. They couldn't delete it fast enough, but I caught it.

I say out every single one of them. Show who is using the multiple names, show the phonies who hide behind the fake names to attack then walk around pretending to be civic "leaders."

It'll blow the top off this city.
