St. James Parish

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

From an upcoming story in this edition of the paper...

Mary Stillman, Dan May and Ellen McEwen, friends and parishioners, decided to have a small reunion and called me for the photos. As I'm a member of the St. Peter parish down the street, though absent for decades, I spent the time out front as I used to in the old days at the Gold Dot Restaurant? Now there is a memory twister for you.

Story by Dan in the upcoming issue.

Hard to determine which is more iconic, the beautiful church or the tiny gym. Both are Lakewood legendary and have their own stories to tell - if only the walls could speak.

Jim,

Although not a member, I have attended Mass several times there. My son also belonged to the Cub/Boy Scouts there. A beautiful church. I am so glad the people hung in there and fought to keep their church open.

Those old church basketball courts always had a few "dead spots" where the ball wouldn't bounce as well. A savvy defender knew how to take advantage of that. Thanks, Corey, for the bittersweet reminder.

It's one thing to re-open a church building; quite another to regenerate a vibrant church community. How has St. James done on that front?

The have a great, but aging group of parishioners. There are also building into that family heritage, and participation.

All churches are under attack by many, many things out of their control, and one could easily forecast their demise for many reasons.

Inner Ring churches are the most under attack, and many from their own religion. Mega-Churches have been a drain on inner ring churches since they popped up. Also featured in "Slaughter of Cities" religion is a great way to move people around. Build a mega-church, hire a "star minister" you get some of the old congregation, which begins to bring in friends, and families from old congregations, and as they move to the cool new mega-church, they drive by miles and miles of homes for sale in suburbia, and the inner ring hold outs, start thinking of moving closer to friends and church, and "Lakewoodites would become Leakwoodites" as Ken would call them.

With a diminishing population, and grwoing spiritualism as opposed to organize religion on the rise, the growth of many storefront, school front, Masonic Hall Front community churches, and Televangelism I would say they have a long hard uphill battle. But, I believe they collected enough for repairs, and when the bells ring people coming flocking. So best said, only Gold knows how they will do in the future.

Typo I assume, but one with some truth behind it.

Last I heard they were sharing a priest with St. Dominick's. They need more commitment than that to really make it work, but I'm sure this bishop doesn't see it that way. The re-opening was a smack down to him by the Vatican.

Thanks, Jim

The story of St. James Church's re-birth in our community is a fascinating one, and is due to the hard work and efforts of many people. Perhaps the Lakewood Observer played a small part in that church's return to our community?

Back in 2010, when St. James, was in danger of closing, I wrote several columns for the Observer detailing my own positive experiences with that church as a guest musician. I do know that many copies of my first column were left in the church, and I believe (but do not know for certain) that a number of them may have been used as evidence as to why the church should be saved. You can read those here:

Here's another column that I wrote regarding the question of the health of mainstream churches generally:

Glad to see another story coming out regarding St. James. We are so fortunate to have that historic church in Lakewood. :D

Back to the banjo... :D
