Breakfast on Madison
Breakfast, I have a choice, I can drive east to "The Coffee Pot Restaurant", very hardy, good home made food, or drive west to ? Why isn't there a great little breakfast restaurant on the western edge of Madison? I could drive north to Detroit, but I'd rather take a short walk down Madison. I need to take a closer look at the available properties and see what could be done. I could have breakfast all over Detroit, but not on Madison.

my friends and I lament this situation often. we dream of the breakfast spot that we would open if we could. dreams are good. til then, I have to schlep it down to Joe's deli for their $3.95 special.

I often wonder, some bar/restaurants, ie: The Beer Engine, The Red Rose, The Village in, they serve food anyway, why not open up early for breakfast?

Breakfast is a revenue loser. High food/labor costs which aren't offset by beer/wine sales. And people want cheap breakfast.

I absolutely agree with you. If only there was a premium markup on "Hair of the Dog" with a side of toast.Amy Martin wrote:Breakfast is a revenue loser. High food/labor costs which aren't offset by beer/wine sales. And people want cheap breakfast.

Re: Breakfast on Madison
I'm not so sure that breakfast is not a money maker, two eggs, home fries, toast, $3.99, actual cost, about .50 cents,
a dozen eggs, $1.30 6 servings two eggs actual cost .20 cents the next 6 orders eggs $1.30 .20 cents each order
a loaf of bread 1.50 10 servings 2 toast actual cost .10 cents toast 4 orders free 0.00 .00
5 lbs potatoes 2.00 20 servings 1 order actual cost .10 cents potatoes 19 servings free 0.00 .00
total cost about $5.00 6 servings @ $3.99 = $24.00 actual cost .40 cents. the next 6 orders now the cost is .20 cents per order
I don't see much wrong with that. times 50 orders a day, = $200.00. if you add coffee to each order @ $1.00 another $50.00, now add more orders, the price goes down even more.
to serve 100 guest 2 eggs, home fries, toast
10 dozen eggs = $18.00
5 loaves bread 8.00
5 lb potatoes 4.00
about $30.00 100 guest @ 3.99 each = about $400.00 where is the loss? and that is without beverage.

to serve 50 guest breakfast, 2 eggs, potatoes, toast, restaurant food cost about $15.00 50 guest @ $3.99 = about $200.00 X 7 days a week = $1400.00, just for breakfast.
4 dozen eggs @ $1.50 doz $6.00
3 loaves bread @ 1.50 loaf $6.00
5 lbs potatoes @ 2.00 bag $2.00
total cost about $15.00 50 guest at $3.99 ea. = $200.00 wish I could turn $15.00 into $200.00 times 7 days, cost $105.00 gross $1400.00 net about $1300.00 and this is without beverage.
Bob Evans probably pays .75 cents for a dozen eggs, and .75 cents for a loaf of bread, and $1.00 for 5 lbs of potatoes, bulk, a serving of breakfast probably cost them .30 cents to make and they charge $5.00 who is not making a profit?

I'm no expert on the restaurant business, but if you figure in labor and overhead costs, that profit margin narrows pretty quickly and dramatically.jackie f taylor wrote:to serve 50 guest breakfast, 2 eggs, potatoes, toast, restaurant food cost about $15.00 50 guest @ $3.99 = about $200.00 X 7 days a week = $1400.00, just for breakfast.

I have been in the food business my entire working career. Breakfast is not a money maker, trust me. Not a money loser, but you don't make a majority of your profit from breakfast.

Re: Breakfast on Madison
Well thanks Amy for your insight, and another point of view, I know more now. I always visit small, owner operated restaurants, some are only open for breakfast & lunch, I thought they were doing ok, still, wish there was a little restaurant on the western edge of Madison.

If you are coming in, drop the name. Taco Tontos. Be proud, we love Lakewood families who own Lakewood business.
Post the menu, post the hours, post photos of the food. You work your ass off, bring it brother, like I know you can.
Welcome back, welcome home.
