Except don't the same number of people need to run the trucks if it is on 1 day or two? My understanding is they need 1 truck for trash and 1 truck for recycling. Or is it the same truck for both?

Matthew

I believe trashed is picked up 5 days a week in Lakewood. I think at one time we had six
trucks working, with a crew of two or three,

Even if it is 4 days a week, with the occasional Holiday throwing everything off, you are
talking about double the work effort, so at least 1.5 times the crew at the minimum.
Do they need a different truck? You know if I remember correctly looking back at the
discussion about trucks from before. The Lakewood truck was available with a longer
arm. Would that make it easier?...

What would be an interesting price comparison on this would be, a second person in the
truck to throw blue bags of recyclables into a separate bin, or trailer.

Save $500,000 in trash cans alone, 10 years of salary? No extra trucks...

I remember and interesting conversation with some trash guys during the recent switch.
They thought anything would be better than the little trucks. It seems that in the old days,
you would put a trash can roll it out to the truck, lean the lip if the can against the truck
and "lever it" into the truck. Grab the handle and pull out an empty can after a shake or
two. Almost no serious lifting that you could get hurt with. Then we got the little carts,
which were more fun to drive than walk in the winter, but it was more of a strain on their
backs, lifting the bags into the high back of the trucks, then getting them out again. A very
costly solution to a better healthier way to do things, actually made everything worse.

OK, color me confused.

Aren't there NOW two different trucks on trash day anyways? Let's take our trash which is picked up on Tuesday. On Tuesday, there are two totally different trucks that come down our street:

One is the big automated picky-up machine that only requires a driver.

One is the recycling truck that is different from the automated picky-up machine and needs two people. One to drive and one to pick up blue bags, paper, etc.

And, the new plan still calls for two trucks. I'm missing something. I don't understand why BOTH recycling and trash pickup have to be the same day. It's logistics, not additional headcount or trucks.

Matt and Matt….

I suspect if you can answer this question (below) that you can answer Matthew Lee’s questions:

Why did all city employees take Good Friday off, while Refuse worked on Good Friday and took the following Monday off instead? Confusing the entire city....

I suspect it doesn’t take a genius….

I see at least 4 refuse vehicles with separate missions and capabilities
on my street every trash day. Sometimes there could be 5, without
the current commingling of paper / plastic recycling it could be 6.

1. Toter Bin truck with arm.
2. Bulk Refuse, carpets and couches ...
3. Commingled Recycling paper / plastic
4. Yard Waste
5. Scrap Metal, for things private scrappers can't or won't take.

And the occasional Cushman assisting the disabled.

Plastic, metal cans, and glass bottles by volume, are mostly air until
compacted. A trailer or bin without the crushing capability would be
quickly filled with air.

The good news is that City Hall has ensured that your street will look like this ... one business day a week ... forever ... sans the construction ...

Charlie,

While off topic, thanks for bringing up the plans for City Hall to spend your tax dollars to brick Belle Avenue and add real fancy light poles. We are trying to get back to our historical roots.

What you see in this photo is part of the committee's survey to get a feel as to whether residents prefer bricks, concrete, or blacktop.

I'm voting for bricks!

The fancy light poles are already in storage with the garbage bins ... and trees ...

Those fancy light poles make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)

Are you getting the upgrade to the historically correct garbage bins?

I agree, Charlie!

The bulbs for the new light poles are actually called, "City Hall Warm and Fuzzy Lighting."

And, yes, the exploratory committee is trying to go retro on the recycling bins.

Unfortunately, Ward 3 spent all its money studying hotels for Ward 2. :(

Fortunately, Ward 2 didn’t spend all its money studying waterslides at the pool so we may have money left to study the feasibility of vintage garbage cans for the Ward 2 side of Belle Avenue. :D

Of course, you'll need a couple wayfinding signs when all is said and done. May I suggest:

Fancy Light Poles ---->

<----Vintage Trash Bins

Lays Family Size Bag was 16 oz. for $1.49. Now it is 13 oz, but still says Family Size for $1.49.

Which means the price of potato chips went up!

Thought this might be useful to all of us to remember over the next couple months

So as these things continue to spiral out of control, it actually becomes a cycle of destruction brought on by some that just do not get the simple idea that people, like to live where
it is nice. Not next to the bars, next to the 20 bay gas station, not the newest big box store.

Lakewood has spent a long time listening and telling us that the hundreds of millions pumped into Downtown Business will make our lives better, and sustainable, even add to
the quality of life in Lakewood. What we are finding out is the opposite, and we have taken the collective eye off the ball for shiny objects, and false promises.

So the man that wanted a brewery in St. James, and worked to close our parks early to benefit bars nearby, is now making 1/5th of Lakewoodites park possibly 5 blocks away
from where they live so that Public Works can save a POSSIBLE $40,000 a year. BUT FIRST WE HAVE TO SPEND $475,000!

This is madness, how does this even get to a vote?

As residents maybe it is time to ask, "Where is our DowntowN bonus check?"

Another way we could save $40,000 is to go to 3 Council-At-Large positions, period, no wards.

Anybody remember when we had TWO garbage pickups a week - in our back yards?? In those days we were pulling carpeting, wallpaper, etc. out of our first house and filling the side of the garage twice a week - and the city took it all away.

Another benefit of PEOPLE picking up the garbage: In about 1978, when we had moved to this house, the garbagemen picked up the garbage at the house we had just moved from - and picked out 5 PIECES OF OUR SAVINGS BONDS that the new owner had torn up and thrown out!! The garbagemen (one of whom lived in Rocky River) fished out 5 halves, the supervisor called us, and we went to the dump to retrieve them. These bonds were the tail end of a savings plan from an earlier employer, that we had forgotten about - and the bonds had been mailed to us, to the house we had just moved from. (It was illegal, of course, for the new owner to open OUR mail which had been mis-delivered INTO his house through the mail slot - and throw out OUR MONEY - but we couldn't prosecute.)
THAT . . . is SERVICE.
