Standing water in my yard - shrubs/tree options?

I have inches of standing water in my yard and would like to plant shrubs or trees to help absorb the excess water. Are there any good options that will absorb massive amounts of water, quickly (after rainfall on clay soil is a bad combination). All I can think of are weeping willows to absorb the water but have also been told that they are not allowed to be planted in Lakewood. Also, I would prefer shrubs.

While I do not have a drainage problem, we have been looking at Dawn Redwoods.

The reason I think they might do well in standing water there are a bunch down at Eddies Boat Dock, and they are in standing water for weeks and months. Fast growing, can be as wide as a willow.

While there may be some problem planting weeping willows in Lakewood (never heard of that...) you may want to look into Japanese willows. We have three in our front yard. They are kind of like shrubs grafted onto a trunk. Extremely fast growers and soak up as much water as you can spare.

We hosted a workshop last fall that focused on just your issue, Wet Yards and the hand book was a huge hit! I hope it helps.
