Game Story: Party Time on Madison Ave.

Post by Michael Deneen »

The nightmare is over.....the Lakewood Ranger football team beat Amherst Steele 13-10 tonight at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. Ranger kicker James Marshall kicked a 31 yard field goal with only one second left on the clock, giving the Rangers their first win of the season and sending the Lakewood crowd into euphoria.

I'll have a complete game story in the next print edition of the Observer.

In the meantime, a few notes:

*The win breaks a 16 game losing streak, and is Lakewood's first win of the year. It is also their first conference win in three years.

*Playmaker Michael Goolsby scored Lakewood's only touchdown by blocking a field goal and returning the ball into the endzone to give Lakewood a 10-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The crowd went nuts.

*On the ensuing kickoff, Amherst ran the kick back for touchdown, tying the game within a few seconds. Excitement turned to fear in the Lakewood crowd.

*Senior Atticus Kenny played his first game of the season, returning from injury. He made the most of it, running for tough yards on offense and making numerous plays on defense.

*The Ranger defense didn't give up any touchdowns. Among the major contributors were Junior Kevin Musai and Seniors Joe Fitchwell and Adam Giffels.

*Senior cheerleaders, bandmembers, and athletes of the fall sports were honored in a pregame ceremony. Observer Photographer Alex Belisle will add a photo gallery.

Photos of the game and celebration will be added as soon as possible.

Here's the best play of the year, maybe in all of Northeast Ohio

You have to see it to believe it.

Amazing! Have you considered sending it up Sportscenter?

If you're on Facebook, join "Lakewood Football Reports" to see this and other videos.

So far a HS site in New Jersey has featured it, and Goolsby is nominated as "Plain Dealer Defensive Performer of the Week". (which ignores the fact that this is actually a special teams play)

The Miami Hurricanes have locked up SC "Play of the Week", so I don't think they'll use it.
