Lakewood High School Model United Nations

The LHS Model United Nations Club did very well at the Cleveland Council on World Affairs conference held at CSU. Thealexa Becker won a Gavel representing Argentina as the most outstanding delegate in her committee. Una Bobinac was also chosen as the most outstanding delegate in her committee, winning a Gavel representing Argentina. Una and Alex Neidert also received the Superior Delegation Award. Zach Prebel and Jimmy Matthiesen, as freshmen competing in only their second conference, received an Honorable Mention representing the United States. Matt Wesley and Robin Elder were also awarded Honorable Mention representing the United States in their committee.

As always, our students were enthusiastic and respectful. Robin and Matt, our President and Vice President, set the tone with hard work and positive attitude. In all 27 hard-working, intellectually curious students attended the conference. It was an enjoyable two days for me.

Mr. Greanhoff---- Your report sounds very impressive. You might remind our students that Lakewood High has a precedent in having some graduates (a select few because of the extremely high criteria) represent our country and further the advancement of the international common weal.
We have had Ambassadors (Dick Celeste) and high level State Department officials (Virginia Schlundt '67).
These exceptional kids should have their sites set on participation at the international level.

These posts reminded me of one of my favorite Lakewood citizens - Carlyn Irwin, who I feel extremely priviledged to have known. I rarely talked to her when she didn't bring up the Model UN, one of her favorite programs. She too is a Lakewood Graduate and was quite actively involved in World Affairs. I met her when she was in her 80's and she had the energy level of a person half her age and more curiousity about almost everything than anyone I had ever met.

Carlyn was a founding member of the Lakewood Office on Aging and wrote their first by-laws. She served as a trustee of the Lakewood Community Development Corporation until 1983, and as a member of the Resident Council of Lake Shore Towers, a senior citizen residence in Lakewood, until 1986.

In 1990, Carlyn Meeker Irwin was elected to the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame. She was selected because of her contributions to society and because of the positive role model she provided to students.

Carlyn is now (2000) 95 years of age and is still busy and involved. Although she claims that "age has hit me," and that she can't do the public speaking she used to do, she still retains membership in several organizations, including the Lakewood Historical Society, Friends of the Lakewood Public Library, and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. She still focuses her energy on world affairs, women's organizations, and helping people. Her sense of citizen responsibility has never dimmed.

In 1992, Carlyn initiated the Carlyn M. Irwin Fund at the Lakewood Public Library to obtain materials and programs for the enrichment of Lakewood children and youths in understanding world cultural diversities and to stimulate them to support the United Nations, still in Carlyn's opinion the only major peace-seeking organizations in existence. More recently, she participated in Lakewood's program in support of the U.N. Year of the Family in 1994.
