Mailboxes

Post by Ken Lipka »

Hello,
Why is the post office taking away our neighborhood mailboxes? They took our box in front of the Breadsmith, the one in front of Peking kitchen is going away. There was a sign that said the nearest box will be at the Warren headquarters. Did I miss an announcement? Just wondering.

Ken

I have placed a call to an Observer member that works for the post office.

"Ruiz said that USPS conducts weekly "density checks" on the level of mail being deposited in mailboxes. Any box that averages 25 pieces of mail or less per day is considered for removal, he said. This allows the postal service to increase efficiency and lower costs as much as possible."

This is from a California paper, but the same thing is happening in nationwide.

They also removed the one at Rockway and Detroit ... they said it was going away by January 15, but it finally was removed this weekend. They probably had to dig it out first!

I guess if you want to mail something, you've got to go to the post office. So much for convenience. It was nice just walking to the end of the street and dropping it in, though we likely still can have the carrier pick up things ... but I've noticed if I've left things in the box for him to pick up, he often ignores it for days, until I tape it to the front of the mailbox with a post-it note saying, "PLEASE TAKE"
