Mary Ann

I too second Steve Davis' thanks for bringing LO into the process. While sometimes the rough and tumble world of the Deck seems like swimming upstream, I think in the end, some good suggestions were made that hopefully can be added to your list of ideas and the final product for the city.

Another possibility of interesting signage for Lakewood's Gateway. This plays off the "Paris of Cleveland's Inner Ring Suburbs" theme that is catching on quickly around the county.

You would be surprised what gets out of this site and into the world. While working on the Geuaga County Observer, a question came up, "Who is Shawn Juris? and "Why will I not let him buy pants?" This came from a discussion Shawn and I had over pant stores in Lakewood.

Last week, I had lunch with Councilman Jay Westbrook, during lunch he asked me if I was serious about trying to annex Ward 18, and make him the Councilman from Lakewood's 5th Ward. This was from a post almost a year ago. Joe Cimpermann can quote some very interesting threads and posts.

In Chicago, Irish American News asked where my Irish brothers were, and there seems to be a lot of Italians on the Deck.

Like it or not, we are broadcasting to the world, and they are taking part. 42,000 unique ip address, and over 25% from outside of Ohio. Much to check on Lakewood but many more that are turning to AGS and Observer Inc on projects in their city. We recently were finalist in the Knight Foundation Media Challenge, we are all making news. The Observer and Deck have been in the New York Times, Advertising Age, Wall Street Journal to name a few. My favorite is still Ad Age that said, "There are three papers that have it right, The New York Times, The Lakewood Observer, and The Wall Street Journal."

FWIW

Maryann -

I've read your answer and in order to get the information I have asked for, I have to visit three different addresses and read three different reports and wait for one.

If you could just hit my points with bullet answers it would be so much easier to understand.

Is there anyway for you to just answer my questions? I'm truly mystified about all this.

MaryAnn - Are you going to answer my questions?

I really want to know and the resources that you offered are too cumbersome, the information is too hard to access.

I'm not asking really hard questions.

This is my third request.

Navigating Lakewood is relatively easy considering our street plan is a grid, unlike some eastern suburbs that have winding roads and such.

I also question the need for "wayfinding" signs in Lakewood. People who love here already know where they are - do they really need directional signage?
Those from OUTSIDE the area may, but aren't we putting the cart before the horse? Unless we have tourists, or make an effort to bring people here, what's the point?

Perhaps money is better spent on economic development that would create a reason for people to come into Lakewood. We don't have that yet.

Hi,
From my perspective the only place Lakewood needs signage is on I90. We have maybe 2 minutes to catch someone's interest (if we do signs along I90 leading up to Lakewood) and get them to get off and spend an hour or two eating and shopping.

That is a challenge and sorry but I don't see the proposed logo doing it, no matter what color is picked. Regardless, it doesn't even seem there is a plan to place signage along I90.

How about signs at the 3 Lakewood exits that say "If you lived in Lakewood, you would already be home" so that those Avon Lake and other suburban drivers might think a bit as they make their way down the long and icy road.

Hey that was the banners I put up during rush hour over I-90, and the police begged me not to do any longer.

I still have the banners.

One says, "If you lived in Lakewood you would be home already" for pm rush hour. The other side says, "If you lived in Lakewood you could have slept in until right now." for am rush hour.

I thought it was positive messaging, but the police thought it was a distraction.

White Text on green banners about 45' long.

That with the addendum of Bret Callentine's mediocrity statement is a beautiful thing.

Jim - are you a rabble rouser? Here I thought you were all sedate and stuff.

In a previous life, before marriage I was a true Hellion. I am a person that rarely if ever makes threats, I just do it and take full responsibility for my actions. Ask DL who has been a very close and trusted friend since kindergarten, she can tell it all and verify it all.

Since marriage I have mellowed.

Sean McDermott wrote:Wayfinding
The process of using spatial and environmental cues to navigate through an environment. In its most literal sense, wayfinding is the ability of a person to find his or her way to a destination. It can also be defined from the standpoint of the designer or site owner and operator seeking to improve the function of a particular environment. Wayfinding is not separate from traditional signage design, but is a broader, more inclusive way of assessing all the environmental issues that affect our ability to find our way.
Okay....I understand the ‘most literal sense’ definition of wayfinding. I challenged with interpreting the ‘using spatial and environmental cues’ and the ‘more inclusive way of assessing all the environmental issues that affect our ability to find our way’ parts. Can someone translate these to plain English for me?

Charlie - let's see who gets an answer first.

Whatever I'm doing is working.
