As a student of history, I really think that Martin Luther King Jr. would have liked the idea of a National Holiday bearing his name dedicated to service to others. I can think of no more fitting tribute to this great leader.
I hope that it is an idea that continues, but even if it doesn't nationally, it certainly can in Lakewood. Next year, maybe Lakewood can make it even a bigger idea. We have so many great organizations that dedicate themselves to service in Lakewood from H2O to the boy scouts and girl scouts, the Jaycees to Rotary to PTA and numerous church groups. Maybe well before hand they can lay out opportunities for volunteering for this special day. It would be a great way to find new members as well as make a significant impact in our city.
