It is funny you bring this up. I spoke to a group yesterday that is calling for "transparency" in this city. They use a "name" to hid behind while screaming for transparency. When I mentioned that, some got it, others did not.
When they complained that public groups are not transparent, and they did not have to be. I pointed out that they are now a "public" group and we must all practise what we preach if we are to start change.
In "Where's Bob" we were taught baby steps, and I think that is what we need to look at and expect. City Hall has taken baby steps, the schools re taking baby steps, the school board is taking baby steps, the library has taken giant steps but that has always been the philosophy of Ken Warren. One wonders what will happen with him retiring.
However, many see dissension and discussion as bad. It is in fact what made this country great. As I mentioned in another thread, other cities I am working with are rapidly working to make everything as transparent as possible. These areas are moving forward at a very fast clip, and it has been a real eye opener dealing with them. Very refreshing, when elected or public groups actually trust the people they are trying to serve.
There is much more, but I cannot tell you.
As always thanks for taking part.

The city of Lakewood had been able to operate in a vacuum for years before the Observer. If you did not want anything in the paper, you just ignored them, and it never went in. The Sun Papers rarely covered Lakewood, and the PD would only show up when there was a serious crime. This is one reason so many civic leaders wanted the Observer started.
That said, when you are an elected official, paranoia seems to come with the territory. There is always someone laying in the weeds hoping to knock you off the stump and/or out of office. This is why I say baby steps. This is why I go out of my way to thank and amplify those willing to come in and take part. It takes a very brave person willing to put their job on the line over a simple statement made in a heated discussion.
Mayor Edward FitzGerald was leery originally as a councilman. However I have to believe he now understands the project and the great things that can happen when you wade into the mosh pit of discussion and dissension. As I have mentioned before, I have had the great opportunity to speak with and now work with many mayors and council people here in Ohio, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and California. They all worry about public discussions like the ones here. However they forge ahead. Recently many like Joe Cimperman look at the Deck and see the Mayor as being in the "new leader" roll. One that is not afraid to put it out there. This is a good baby step.
Other groups that are public but not elected will be even harder to convince, many are run but control freaks that come from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Control the message, run from the conversation push the agenda, stay on topic, etc. This will surely speed up their demise in the 21st century. In the age of information, their conversations fly from cell to cell, from twitter account to twitter account. In the 21st century the only way to hope to control the conversation is to step into the light and take an active part in the discussion.
As in another discussion here, one has to applaud those from the community that have met to discuss things. But in this era, that can only be considered a starting point. A starting point to the much larger and equally important discussion with more.
Baby steps, ownership of words and ideas are steps in the right direction.
TAOOOTTSC lodge meeting has been canceled because of cold weather.
If you are not sure what I mean, do not worry it is a secret.

I don't see vast hordes of people weeping at feeling left out; there is a very small community of people who post on this forum, giving an impression of large numbers, but some of them are serial posters. If you filtered a dozen or so names (feel free to filter me, if you wish), there would be far less activity here.
In any event, we have chosen a form of government where the citizenry doesn't govern; rather we elect people to do the governing, and if we don't like what they do, we elect someone else. There are places where the citizenry does do the governing directly, and if we really wanted that, I suppose we could redo our charter and eliminate city council and the mayor. I'm not advocating this because I think too many of our citizens, including some of the most voluble posters here, don't really know what they are talking about, and we would end up in endless semi-informed debates with results that would be subject to further endless semi-informed debates.
I appreciate that the Observer provides some information that the other papers don't, but I think there is still room for improvement. For example, I find it difficult to locate a schedule, or even results, for some of the high school teams, such as wrestling or hockey. They might be in the PD, but I find their website hard to navigate, and I discontinued home delivery (I was sad to lose the paperperson
, as delivery had been very good; but I didn't want to make any financial contribution that might go to their editorial staff.

Actually Charlie, electing someone for office doesn't mean that you walk away and let them do what they want, or that you should abdicate personal responsibility for what goes on. That's like singing "I didn't know the gun was loaded, so sorry my dear".
It is our responsibility to ask questions when we have to them, make remarks when needed, praise when it is earned and criticize when necessary. Also, as a democracy, we have the right to talk about it.
Yes, I am a serial poster, I am also an activist and a stakeholder in this town. If I want to know something I ask, if I want something to change I find out what I can do.
That's part of being a responsible participant.

None of the money collected for home delivery ends up in the staffss hands. We set that up so that the delivery kids would actually receive a 350% raise from what the Sun was paying them.
All profits from the paper are put back into the community. i am not paid nor is anyone other than Brian who is now gone, and the sales people.
As for the site, we will do what we can with the new version and I hope we can win you back.
Thanks for the post.

Again I want to make it clear.
No one, including myself is paid at the Lakewood Observer, outside of
the ad sales people, and the designer who is no longer doing the paper.
Paper carriers get paid what they collect 100% and we view it as an
entry level work training program for kids ages 9 - 15. We get
none of their money.
I could not take a pay check while asking others to volunteer.
My graphic company helps with the cost of utilities, space, phones,
etc.
This is a complete volunteer effort, and keeps money in Lakewood, instead'of carpet bagging it out of Lakewood.
FWIW
