I specifically modified this version of PHPBB so that it would not record IP addresses.

It is not possible to look at the Deck database and see who logged on when and for how long.

A user would actually have to log in to have that information captured.

If you do not sign in, no one knows you are peeking at the Deck. Accessing a site without signing or logging in is called "Lurking". No-one can tell if a lurker ever created an account or not.

We felt VERY STRONGLY that anyone should be able to read what people are talking about. Ditto feeling strongly about using real names for real conversations.

The Deck does set a cookie so your browser and the PHPBB software can communicate - to remember your particular settings.

A Cookie is a text file. That's it. It can be created via a Perl script, Javascript, Active Server Pages etc. A Cookie is text information that is transferred from the server to your Browser via the HTTP protocol and then stored on your hard drive. It is not an executable file, it is not some nefarious info sniffer from Techno-World, it is only a text file.

If a site uses a Cookie then every time you visit that site, if the browser has a Cookie stored on it, it transfers that Cookie to that site. The program on the site using the Cookie then access the information and acts upon it.

It is important to understand here that a Cookie will only be transfered to the site that created it. Part of the Cookie is the domain name of the site that created it as well as the path to the program that access it. Unless the domain and path match exactly as they were set, the Cookie IS NOT TRANSFERED! There is no way for someone from one site to see the contents of the Cookie from another site. It's just mechanically not possible.

Now, if you have created an account on the Deck and you have posted on the Deck, what difference would it make if your IP address were captured to the database, since you are already behaving in a completely transparent manner?

While I don't see that it does matter (who cares?) IP addresses are not collected in the PHPBB (Deck) database.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with the Civic Leader that orginaly made the comment, about monitoring ip address.

I also had comments from Charley Page about a reference to number of unique ip addresses that come to the Lakewood Observer in my comments.

Charley has a good point. Let me explain. We have secured the services of an outside notionally recognized auditing company to audit traffic through our site. These numbers appear on a page of information that is generated each month. It contains no ip addresses, just the number of unique ip addresses. It also lists, number of pages accessed, average time spent, hits, documents, and other information.

There is no way for the LO to monitor individual users, except in the ways I mentioned earlier, which are available to all registered members. At best that will let anyone know who is in what section and nothing more. It does not allow for knowing what thread is being accessed. If a registered member chooses "HIDDEN" in their personal profile, then the registered user, appears only in the "Online Count as HIDDEN" at the bottom of the front page nowhere else.

No lists, no monitoring, no secret agendas, no email captures. Might be interesting to see what other boards or organizations might say on this topic.

Just trying to keep this clear.
