can anyone explain to me why citizens would want to pay for a $800,000 fishing pier??? Did anyone else know about this or are you all surprised as I am?

In terms of long-term planning, the possibility of creating a beach was also considered.
This is insane.
One great idea needed a $30,000 study maybe and would have paid for everything else.
A $800,000 fishing pier, when they are looking according to one councilman for $900,000 in savings.

Might not be as big as deal as we are making it out to be.
I have seen upwards to 10 people at the pier at Gordon Park or Edgewater Park.
Now those 20 could come to Lakewood and snag sheephead.
Compare that to backyard trash pick up for all. I think we can see clearly which way this will go.
Maybe a green initiative, catch carp instead of a can of gefilte fish?
baby steps.

FISHING?
Who said anything about FISHING?
Not that I want to disparage that biblically inspired pastime...but...
You can fish down in the Valley all over the place. Oh, excuse me Jim, the Emerald Canyon.
You can also fish on the beautiful pier at Edgewater Park, that great Bradstreet Landing pier just over in Rocky River and several other close-by locations I can think of around here...etc. etc. etc.
I wanna beach!
I wanna beach!
I WANNA BEACH!!!!
Just imagine fisherpeople tootling by all your picnic tables at Lakewood Park on a Sunday afternoon with their fragrant catches of perch, catfish, and carp

Before some people get carried away, the $800,000 figure is a total project estimate for the next phase. There is no money budgeted for it currently, and no money has been expended on Phase 2.
The city received over $700,000 for the completion of Phase 1 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and other state grants, and the hope is that we could get more state or federal funding to make Phase 2 practicable.

As always thanks for coming in and setting me/us right. I was actually going to talk with you and councilman Dever tomorrow morning about this.
Thanks again.

I join with Jim in appreciation for Mayor FitzGerald's taking the time to provide clarification on this, and other issues concerning Lakewood.
Unfortunately, with the somber financial reports coming out of Columbus, I wonder how much will be allocated, either short, or long-term from the state level, for much of anything in Ohio?

I think the point is do the citizens want to make Phase 2 as it stands
a reality my guess would be "NO"...and who has mapped out the Phases...would love to see the plan in it's entirety...would anyone else?
