Spooky Pooch Rock Stars

Post by Mary Anne Crampton »

Congratulations to Spooky Pooch Co-chairs Rhonda Loje, Katy Davis and Debbie Baker for hitting a home run with today's event in downtown Lakewood. The amount of planning, begging, and running around required for an activity such as this can only be imagined by most of us. The result of months of planning was evident to all today. Wow.

We had over 110 dogs pre-registered, and nearly as many sign-up today. What a sight to behold: dogs of all breeds and sizes dressed in costumes from the simple to the amazingly creative. When we saw the spectators lining Detroit in folding chairs, we knew we had a hit on our hands.

Mary Breiner has already posted pics in her photoblog...thanks Mary...they are great! http://lakewoodobserver.com/photoblogs/ ... och-parade

The City police and public works personnel deserve a special acknowledgment for the behind the scenes work that kept everyone safe and the parade running smoothly. Thanks to the Schools and the Library for sharing equipment with us, too.

Our volunteers were invaluable, and in combination with our great sponsors are what made Spooky Pooch possible. Special thanks to those who stepped in as the event unfolded when they saw areas where we needed help - - yet another reason to have the confidence to bring a new activity to the community. This kind of enthusiastic support assures that Spooky Pooch will be a part of LakewoodAlive's programming in 2009.

Celebrity judges, Channel 19's Denise Dufala, Dawn Kendrick and author Sandra Philipson gave the parade an extra shine - and Lakewood sure looked good on TV this evening!

Congratulations to the planners, the volunteers, the pooches, their families and the spectators - another great day in Lakewood!

This was one of the silliest events in Lakewood ever. I hope it becomes an entrenched tradition. I haven't smiled that much in ages and the photographs bring that smile right back to my face.

Clearly, this is something that we have needed for a very long time.

Thanks to all involved for a most enjoyable event.

I think I saw some unmuzzled 'pit bulls' in those pics. I wonder if they got a special dispensation from the mayor for the parade??

There was a City Dog Warden present to handle any violations.

I don't know....I kinda had a lot on my plate that day. I'm sure that the Animal Warden would have told us if she had any problems. We were all at the registration area together.

I talked to her boss (Capt. Gary Stone) this morning to thank him for all of their support and he mentioned no problems to me.
