Neighborhood Solicitation for "D.A.R.E."

Post by Jeff Endress »

A couple of "gentlemen" just came to my office. They claim they are solicititing for D.A.R.E. by selling a coupon book for only $20.00. When I inquired as to the amount going to D.A.R.E., they hemmed and hawed and finally replied FIFTY CENTS OF EACH BOOK!

Beware. If you want to support DARE in Lakewood, I'm sure there are better ways of doing so.

Hmmmmm . . . perhaps I am wrong but I question this 'fundraiser.' As far as I know (I'm a teacher but not a 5th grade teacher) there is no such fundraiser. Did they say which school they were from? Is this for DARE basketball, or the program in general? The program is run by the police department and I'm confused by this gathering of funds.

My reaction exactly. The purpose of my post was NOT to endorse this. I found the fifty cent cut to be laughable. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Jeff, I had two men in our office last week - same pitch. They worked every office in the building. I wonder if the DARE officers from LPD know anything about this? Amy - can you give us an idea as to who the DARE officers are? They should be informed.

Just curious: did they say something to the effect of "these coupon books are going quickly...in fact we're down to our last two...." or anything along those lines?

I've been getting a lot of door-to-door folks like that lately. I'm tempted to put up a "no solicitors" sign, but I don't mind supporting the high school kids for their programs. But lately there's been the DARE guys, someone saying they're supporting wheelchair basketball, another group selling magazine subscriptions so they can take a trip, and finally some kids hauling around a big rubbermaid container filled with various tchotckes for $10 or more, with the money going to some group fund that'll allow them to go to Cedar Point or something ...

Even in the dead of winter, it's been pretty bad.

Just the LDS folks for me. About twice a week. :D Do we know if the DARE guys are the scamming type or are they really selling for the DARE program. I have no clue but dosent the funding for the DARE program come from the city's police budget?
