Just curious???

Post by Suzie Dean »

I had a question and wasn't exactly sure of the answer. I was wondering if anyone could inform me of this information.

Is there a city ordinance on exactly how long signs (break for kids, and/or political) may be posted in a yard?

Thanks!

I believe the rule is 30 days before the election.

That's why the signs went up this weekend.

I was told by the law director that the rule is 60 days prior to an election - that election being November 6th. That is why the signs are appearing this weekend.

I believe there is a separate rule regarding the Brake 4 Kids signs because they are allowed on tree lawns while other signs aren't.

Hope that helps.

The Brake for Kids signs have special permission to be posted on tree lawns from Sept 1-Sept 30 to aid with the purpose of the program. After that time the signs can and will be removed. Participants are encouraged to save the signs for the following year whenever possible.

As far as political or issue signs in Lakewood, there has been great discussion about this topic over the past several years. There is no application in regards to political signs in our ordinances because they are considered temporary signs-so they can be posted as soon as desired but have to be removed as soon as the election is concluded. However, they have to be posted on someones personal private property, not posted in the tree lawn, and are limited to 6 feet and not higher than 4 feet from the ground.

The 30/60 day rules are more of a custom/etiquette issue than a law in Lakewood.

I put my "Brake for kids" sign in my front lawn and leave it up. I like to call it part of my landscaping...after all, is it wrong to remind people of this year round?

Finally somebody noticed my artwork. I can call it art, right? Keep an open mind all you skeptics.

Artwork?
I was hoping for buried treasure...and I was even going to buy the shovel at one of our newest stores - Lakewood Hardware.

Is there a limitation to number of signs in a person's lawn per candidate?

No.

But again, etiquette and custom are 1 per lot. And they should be in the yard not the easement (treelawn).

My neighbor and I put Brake 4 Kids sigans on out treelawns on Saturday after the festival. By Monday evening they had both been removed or stolen! :(

...sure Dan, there is buried treasure...I'll supply the shovel (purchased from Lakewood Hardware, of course) and lemonade--just please put the dirt back in a decorative arrangement throughout the yard. Keep Lakewood Beautiful, you know.

...or...you could build the mound up higher to better display your "Vote for me" sign (personally, that would be my choice).

Sorry, you're house was so much closer than Barry Buick, when others can get the signs.

Glad to know who the culprit was - I was planning on setting up a sting operation in case they came back to steal my re-elect Tom George sign. :D

I have had two Brake 4 Kids signs taken from my tree lawn already. I am sure they found a nice home. Fortunately, I have a cache in my garage.
