Where is Lakewood's Tallest Tree?

Post by Mark Crnolatas »

In a conversation with an inhabitant of Rocky River, he said he was raised in Lakewood and that somewhere in our city he was told, is the tallest tree for many miles around Greater Cleveland . Does anyone know of this tree?

I'm sure with some technology, we could locate the tallest tree in our city, if it seemed like a thing to do.

Since Lakewood was known for being "The City of Trees" at one time, it might be an interesting little endeavor to locate THE tree.

Summit Avenue has one of the largest, also a Moses Cleveland Tree, but probably not the tallest.

I have a larger Moses Cleveland tree in my backdoor neighbors backyard that is a little known plaqued Moses Cleveland tree that impacts 4 neighbors.

It is much bigger and in better condition than the one on Summit. The one on Summit was hit by lightning a few years ago and has been struggling since.

Although, it was infested with Gypsy moths this year.

tallest tree in Lakewood

We have a HUGE pink oak that is probably the tallest tree on Wyandotte, between Madison and Franklin. It is my neighbors and he is looking for someone to trim it. Everyone he calls wants to take it down. Any environmentally friendly tree trimmers out there?

My tree is between Clifton Road and Arlington/Overlook. It's in the backyard of 3 houses.

I live on Andrews (just north of the RR track) and I've been told our oak is one of the tallest in the city. Not sure if that's true, but I do know it's at least twice as tall as our house and it takes three adults holding hands to surround it.

Just curious, is it a red or white oak?

Joe

Probably right now, it's a green oak. In the fall, it will be a red oak, and in the winter, a white oak....

Here's how to measure a tree:

http://www.americanforests.org/resource ... easure.php

Now, we just need 1). someone to create a Lakewood tree "Leader Board", 2). people to nominate huge trees they know, after doing the measurements

pretty soon we'll have an answer....

maybe this could be a classroom project somewhere...

Certainly one tree that seems to be among the tallest sits on the eastern side of Woodward; in the high 1500's-1600's addresses.

I wonder whether the city forestry division has some idea of the tallest tree? As for the shortest, I have a few candidates trying to make their way through my shrubbery.

Joe,

Although I like to hug trees, I'm not good at identifying them. A friend told us it was a Pin Oak. Don't know if that answers your question.

Yeah it does. I was just curious. If it's a pin oak it's a red oak. Red oaks have leaves with pointy lobes (like the pointy arrows the red man uses -indians). If it's white oak the lobes are rounded like the bullets of the white man. In general that is... :)

Seems there aren't too many white oaks around. Nice wood. There is an old old one being taken down right now next too Taft. Its had a lot of very big dead branches on it for a few years. A danger to kids. Although I'd like to chain myself to it yell go away with your chainsaws, it's probably best... :) wish I could have some of that wood.
