Block Watch-How to Start
The first step to starting a Community Block Watch is to talk to your neighbors. This is a community driven program, it needs to involve the people on the street.
The second step:
There will be a meeting on Aug 15 at 7:00pm at the City Hall Auditorium hosted by Colleen Wing. There will be a presentation at the meeting including the details of starting and maintaining an active Block Watch in your area by the Lakewood Police Department.
Please contact Colleen Wing by PM on the deck, at cwing@speakeasy.net, or at 227-8581 with the name and block section of your street. If there reoccurring crime concerns in your are please include this information.
It will be important to designate a contact for your street, if you don't know your neighbors that well then I can help identify this person after the meeting. This meeting is open to all Lakewood residents.
Notice: The purpose of this meeting is to designate community policing and begin Block Watches in any area where citizens would like to begin this program. Questions should be limited to this topic.
Let me know if anyone has questions about this program.
Thanks,
Colleen Wing
Ward 3 Council Candidate

Bryan,
I am not aware of that program. I called to asked the city about how to get a block watch going and they connected me with the Sgt. in charge.
A lot of people I know have asked me about starting one on their block and it has snowballed from there. Some live in Ward 3 and some in other wards, either way, the first step is the same- if the presentation is through the Lakewood police dept.
So, I guess for now the answer is no. Who is sponsoring it?
Thanks,
Colleen

Thanks Colleen. I'm not sure who's sponsoring it but there's a flyer going around about a meeting at Roosevelt on Aug 8. Maybe someone who has the flyer and give more information.Colleen Wing wrote:Bryan,

Bryan,
You got me curious. I searched on the eeer other deck in Lakewood and see that a "madisondrunk" posted a meeting for Ward 3 Blockwatch and a meeting for south of Madison on the Deck. It must be sponsored by another candidate because I checked with the city first to see if they have a program and the Sgt. said it is community driven. They just get us started.
So, I guess the answer is still no.

Block Watch Meeting Information
Although I am out of town, I noticed this thread and thought I could shed some light on the August 8th Block Watch meeting. A month or so ago there was a lot of conversation amongst some Roosevelt parents and neighbors about starting a Neighborhood Block Watch.
Sue Kelley and I decided to move ahead and plan one for Ward 3 south of Madison. We contacted the schools and requested their support. In addition, Sue contacted Teri Richards who is the Block Watch coordinator, as well as the police contacts.
Once we had settled on a date, we created, printed and distributed a flyer letting the residents know about the meeting. This is a meeting to start the block watch. There will be an explanation of how it works as well as signup sheets. Anyone interested in learning more about this particular watch is welcome to join us.
We have already gotten a lot of positive response from the flyers and are really looking forward to a successful launch. I did post information about the Block Watch meeting on the Candidate Forum of the Observation Deck several weeks ago.
It's nice to see that so many people are interested in setting up Block Watches throughout Lakewood. It's this kind of community involvement that is going to create the safety, security and peace of mind we are all seeking.
I hope this clears up any misunderstandings or misinformation regarding the August 8th Block Watch meeting for Ward 3.
