LO Straw Poll

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Starting tomorrow the Lakewood Observer will be bringing back our Straw Poll of the front page.

I would encourage you to check in daily and let us know how you feel.

Tomorrow will start with race for mayor, followed by campaign topics.

Let us, the city and the politicians, know what you are thinking.

Thanks as always for your participation.

Aw Jim,

I thought I was doing pretty well with my own little poll about who's gonna be Mayor!

Besides, who could beat the Hamburger Mayor that Stephen just posted on that thread?

Gary

You did a great job.

Anyone can suggest a question for out straw poll.

The Observer is about empowering residents. Consider this a simple case of that. You want a straw poll and we deliver one that is easy to use and easier to suggest questions for.

If that is not us living up to our mission statement than I do not know what is!

I do understand that Mayor McCheese might indeed be available, Stephen.

Time will tell.....

Now that was interesting.

We had our code monkey leave the safe guard off the Poll. This allowed anyone to vote more than once. While not a fair straw poll, it allowed us to try some of our other back-up security measures before starting the REAL POLL on Monday. Let's call this a morals poll.

Gotcha! It was fascinating being able to watch the poll be used and abused and by who. Matt Markling, who is running for school board, was the only candidate to report the flaw early in the day. Thanks.

If you have any hot button topics, please email them to me, post them here or enter them in Future Questions.

I was going to ask about that. I just went to go vote, clicked submit, didn't get any kind of notification and it looked like nothing happened so I did it again.

It wasn't until about the 4th time I clicked submit that I was like "oh wait, it did record it". I was tempted to go vote a few times for the others in the poll just to balance it out, but then I saw this. :)

Glad to know you're fixing that for the official poll, otherwise it could be a little confusing. :)

Bryan

It was not a fix, this was done on purpose. In an era of safety, and moving the city forward we found it interesting here.

You can ask Matt Markling. My answer to him was, "We know all about it and will have it tight on Monday. We are using this as a civic experiement into morals."

We are getting ready to revamp much of the Observation Deck and Main Website. Little pieces will be tested on this version. I would not look for the New and Improved website until after Christmas. Much emphasis will be placed on "social networking." When we started the Project we never envisioned the number of civic groups that would be started by Observers, or the number of clubs, groups and civic projects that would turn to us for FREE websites and discussion boards.

Thanks again for the note.

Good to know. I think the most confusing part was that there was no message given to me after I voted that it was successful, it looked like nothing happened.

Looking forward to the changes you guys are working on. Sounds very exciting!

He has been very busy lately. He may be able to work a couple of debates into his schedule  I will talk to the Hamburglar (his campaign manager) to confirm his availability.

I sure hope he'll make Grimace his new Finance Director. :)

So is the vote working now? Or if I voted today, will that be wiped out and I have to vote again on Monday?

Other than Bryan who had problems with the poll, what did it tell you other than Matt Markling is observant, knows who to contact when there are problems and is moral? All good points in his favor - but I'd like to know more about him and his ideas for the schools - maybe he can post in a separate thread for the school board candidates.

Was this experiment in voting for your own edification or are you planning to share? ;)

Hmmmmm.......

Let's say that Jim now probably knows A GREAT DEAL about each of us who are interested in the mayoral outcome.

As with my own "Who will be Mayor in November?" post (when an official change is not supposed to transpire 'till January) a little thought before posting never hurts!

As for Jim's little poll yesterday? We'll probably never know the whole story.

But the last I checked, my poll still had George, McCheese and Fitzgerald at one vote each, with Demro at 0.

Ah politics. Ya gotta love it!

I might suggest that the disclaimer be printed BEFORE the submit button instead of after. Everyone knows where I stand but for those who thought they were submitting anonymously it's a bit of a gotcha!

Suzanne

This was not done to shame anyone or pick on anyone.

When we started this project we wanted to make sure we kept our word. Never share email addresses with anyone. Keep use of that email by us to a minimum. Honor those using real names, ban those that are not.

This was not a trap, it was a test of software used to protect all that use this site. You have to remember we go a step farther than most. ANYONE can read our posts without signing in. But to take part in the discussion one must use a real name, with real contact information.

The front page is being Incorporated into the new center which will house the Observation Deck. To do this and keep our promises to you and everyone else in this project we have to examine many different secure systems. One is a hybrid of IP Addresses and sign in names.

While working on various systems we started this straw poll. While preparing the next system we notice what some could call abuse, others might call harmless fun.

Suzanne you are in the computer network systems business. You know that anywhere you go on the net you can be tracked. Most make you sign in, this is nothing more than wanting more information, for email sales, abuse, privacy invasion, etc. Here at the Observer, we ask minimal, and keep it locked up where it can not be hacked or abused. We will NEVER share lists, sell them, or use them for commercial purposes. I believe we are the only forum making this promise in the state.

Another great internet untruth is fake names. They all go back to an ip address. So this gives a select few the power to know, who is reading saying and doing what. If not an ip-address, and email or portal than can be tracked. We would not betray our trust lying to residents in this way.

We are not big brother and if you do not believe than join with us and help. We have almost 15 different groups, with different moderators maintaining this and other parts of various sites. Ask them we take all of this very, very seriously.

Monday, we will have it limited to those willing to leave a name. When we get closer to elections we will ask for registered voters only.

No one will cover politics this year better than the Observers.
