Incident At Melt

My mother-in-law and 2 year old son were having lunch at Melt yesterday but , before they could order the waiters announced that a 911 call had been placed because a man was outside wielding a knife and they should evacuate the restaurant. According to my mother-in-law, panic ensued and she and my son were nearly trampled getting out the back door. She has bruises on her ankles from people stepping on the back of her shoes. Does anyone know what happened?!

That sounds awful! Why in the world would they have them evacuate when they could just lock the door???? Sounds negligent!!!!

Sorry Jennifer,

I knew before long that you, some member of your family, or Melt would get blamed for this event, lately that's how things go on this deck.

I wanted to see if anyone knew what happened after reading your post as well, but sorry- if it's not cute and fuzzy bunnies, it didn't happen.

You post has all the subtles of what you complain about.

I see no blame being placed on family or business.

From what I have heard from two that were there. A man without a shirt was seen to have a knife. (no one knows if he was flashing it or it was just seen). An off duty FBI agent(seems like we have many here (saw it and thought for safety the Melt should be emptied. Walked in and asked people to leave. Panic ensued, and no one knows what happened after that.

This is nothing more than rumors put together.

Colleen, many of us here talk fuzzy bunnies, and the people we walk and chase down at night. We can talk equally about the good, the bad and the ugly of Lakewood.

We have NEVER told anyone what to post or say on this forum or in the paper.

So to act like anything is being spun is just not true.

Please tell me the last time I asked you not to post something?

I did and I spoke with Justine.

It was not blaming the Melt, ot was thinking maybe the FBI agent could have just locked the door instead of the panic.

Email and Forum boards are an imperfect way to send out information sometimes.

your post is so funny I don't even think it is worth replying to. First, the deck is filled with so many opinions negative and positives I wonder what you are reading if it is only fuzzy bunnies?? Second, can you show me where I blame jennifer or her family for what happened? That is so bizarre that you could read that. Whomever sent everyone out of the restaurant like that IN MY OPINION was negligent!!! I stand by that opinon especially considering they got hurt!!!!

If you have such distaste for this deck, why do you bother to read and post then?

Ummm, how is suggesting negligence not placing blame? Being that there was no mention of the off duty FBI agent, I certainly took it to mean that "they" referred to Melt.
Interesting that there's not been any clarification about what happened. A crowd pushing through a bar is one thing when they are all adults but can certainly be more dangerous with kids involved. On the other hand the way the building is set up, I can understand getting others out of harm's way by sending them out the back door.
So what happened to the character with the knife?

As this happened out front of the Chamber of Commerce, what is the talk there? I had heard the head of the Chamber was there at the time.

Is the Chamber working on any safety items with Lakewood businesses.

What are the Chamber's thoughts on the Police Levy? Crime in the area?

Negligence might have been a harsh word. I do not think Matt Fish is negligent. It might have been easier and safer to block the front door. Could have been moving people from the front window in case the glass broke and it was misunderstood. One person was the

Negiligent may sound like a strong word, but if someone induced panic inside a restaurant because of someone standing outside with a possible knife and children and elderly got injured, I still say it is negligent. I doubt training for any law enforcement officer would dictate that procedure.

I also find it negligent that someone would twist my words to make it sound like I blamed the victims, and while on the subject find it negligent that anyone would generalize all posters on the deck as fuzzy bunny posters.

I haven't been able to respond to any of the posts that have followed mine as I have been out of town with my family.

I posted my query to find out what happened, and how the incident was followed up. All I know is that I came home to a very distraught mother-in-law (she's NOT the hysterical type). It was her impression that a Melt staff member asked the customers to leave, but perhaps it was the undercover FBI agent (where are all these agents coming from?!). I'm not sure it matters who told them to leave, but it might be instructive to the staff at Melt about how to handle emergencies.

My practice is in an high security psychiatric facility. We have drills for emergencies all the time, but we learn the most from reviewing how we reacted to actual emergencies.

As for the fuzzy bunny issue...I turn to the LO over lunch as much as I can to find out the good, the bad and the ugly in Lakewood. It is my best link to the community. I don't agree with everything that is posted, but I wouldn't learn anything if I did.

As for Melt...we ate at the Beer Engine that night; since then my mother-in-law has recovered from her Post Traumatic Stress and we will continue to eat at Melt, maybe even tonight
