I don't know that you can define "art," but you can surely define artists and in some rare circumstances that may be a requirement, but not for basic arts district legislation.
Having a broad and inclusive definition of "arts" and "artists" is beneficial.
Being very specific in your designations is counter-productive unless you are talking about a live/work space where a writer may not appreciate being surrounded by musicians.

Gee DL, I always thought that the Cleveland Orchestra was very visually appealing.....
But, to clarify, I think that Ivor should amend his definition to "sensory appealing" medium....
So, does cooking fit into the definition of Art?
Jeff

Stan you really crack me up. Now go over and post at the right thread! Is comedy an art? Cooking is DEFINITELY an art! All senses could benefit from art! Can you imagine a better feeling than eating an artfully prepared meal, looking at art on the wall, while wearing art and listening to really nice music, the kind that brings tears to your eyes. OK maybe that is the other thread too!

art is what you let art be...? if that makes sense?
thanks jeff. that's exactly what i meant.
that's the beauty of art, charyn. everyone can find something that appeals to them. I can like slipknot and find it artistic, and you can like the police and call their music artistic. it isn't narrow or specific.
I had a family friend in germany who made sculptures out of metals and garbage. never understood quite where he came from, but he loved making them.
it's all about expression and getting the pleasant feeling of making something good.

if you guys want to see art.
i learned about this while watching MTV's show "true life", this episode was called "I have Autism".
the artists name is jonathan lerman, he is severly autistic and cannot communicate his thoughts and feelings with words. all he knows is to say that he is "upset".
at twelve years of age, his grandfather passed away. jonathan started to draw, and drew his grandfather and the agony that jonathan was feeling because of his grandpa's passing.
speaking from a technical point of view, this artwork is amazing. speaking from a emotional point of view, this artwork absolutely blows my mind.
some of his artwork is very big in size. the amount of emotion and effort poured into these drawings inspires me to be the best i can be. to give full effort, every time.
now, if you want to see what true art is...

don't pay attention to the lines and shapes and faces. read between the charcoal lines, feel the emotion pouring out of the canvas.
enjoy.
