Health and Wellness?

Post by Ivor Karabatkovic »

I know this should be moved to the suggestion box...but as I'm sitting here wondering if I have a hernia or not.. I thought to myself

"why not ask my fellow observers about symptoms?"

well, there's no health and wellness area on the deck so I don't know where to ask!

A health and wellness area would be great, people could share old remedies and experiences and what they do to keep fit and healthy.

what do you guys think about the idea?

anyway,
I have this weird pain directly in my belly button.. my stomach isn't hurting...I'm not feeling sick or nauseous at all.. and I told my dentist about it today because I had an appointment with him, and he said "yep, you have a hernia. just get it checked out it's no big deal."

It's not a really bad pain...and it comes and goes... I find it hurts the least if I'm sitting or standing...but hurts the most if I'm laying down.

Anyone ever have a hernia?
I'm going to the doctor to get it checked out tomorrow morning, but I'm freaked out about the thought of surgery. Not the surgery part, but recovery time. My last stay in the hospital was two days, and it was hell. With the final grading period of school coming and alllllllllll that stuff, along with work (indians) I can't afford to miss school or work. Not to mention, I have some Ranger Baseball to cover!

*sigh*
help?

and all the google search about symptoms I did say just about the same thing. Either there's a bulge going in or out... and you have to be in agony with pain. I'm not feeling a ton of pain unless I'm laying down.

I know each case is individual.. but I had a hernia in my calf (weird, i know) and remember how much pain that caused.

I'm pretty good when it comes to dealing with pain, if I got through the root canal I had last..I can get through almost everything.

You may want to try Lakewood Urgent Care, which is actually on Columbia in Westlake (just north of I90, I believe)

I am surprised the schools do not have an inhouse doctor.

If you have insurance, some insurance companies have numbers you can call to describe symptoms, then they ask you questions and tell you what to do.

Try the teen health clinic.

Although I suspect they'll just tell you it's an overload of bellybutton lint....

jeeze, I gotta write up a will!

Eh I'll wait on the doctor part until it really bothers me.
I have a choice of going to school or the doctors today and I chose school.

I don't think it's anything serious..

Ivor,

Have you tried using leaches? From what I've read, they were the staple of the medical industry back when Jim was a kid.

Ivor, go to a doctor. I'm not implying it's a hernia, only a doctor can tell you what it is or isn't, and it might be just gas, who knows. I had a hernia when I was 16, and the symptoms were just a ache that came and went, but not where yours is. I just had another one which I had fixed at the end of this August, and the whole experience was surprisingly fast, out-patient surgery, and recovery was just watching TV, although kudos for the pain pills. Never felt better.

Ivor,

I'm with some of the other posters (except for the leeches thing :-)

Go see the Doc.

Seriously, put the worry in his hands, and take it out of yours.

People call that worry stuff the "paralysis of analysis"

It could be a number of things, including an ulcer, or appendicitis. Let him decide about pushing on it, as you don't want to spread any potentially nasty things around.

As well, I think I'd see a doctor today, rather than tomorrow, if I were you. At least you would sleep better tonight, knowing what's going on.

We're all pulling for you!

Ivor,

Listen to this mother and please go to the doctor. If it has bothered you enough to mention it then you need to see a professional. Good luck!!!

Ivor -

I am a Dietitian, but worked in a hospital for 6 years. Let us know how you are doing. Pain directly behind the belly button is a classic symptom of appendicitis- not that I'm trying to scare you....but you should definitely get it checked out. The on and off pain is also a sign of appendicitis. I hope you are okay!

I agree with the need for a health and wellness section of the Observer!

Good luck!
