Cleveland Annexed Part Of Lakewood?

While not a huge deal, it has bothered me for some time. Cleveland has erected very large W117th Street Signs at every intersection along that strip of road. They are in the middle of the street, proclaiming for all W117.

The problem is that from the center line West it is Highland Ave. Lakewood has no numbered streets. While this is a very small thing to most, it helps explain why it is The Highland Party Center, and the Highland Apartments. Lakewood loses part of its identity.

Even the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce maps seem oblivious to this attack on our city.

Let's get some Highland Ave. signs up and reclaim our border.

W. 117th is just fine with me. I never, ever, ever have heard it referred to as Highland.

Let's not create unnecessary confusion by giving one stretch of street two different names.

I already have enough trouble explaining to my east side friends that "Warren" and "150th" or "Bunts and "140th" are the same thing.

Next thing you know JOB will be calling Detroit Avenue the Cleveland-Toledo thru-way.

Perhaps to pacify those like Jim, I hear they are renaming the RTA station (when complete) to Highland Station, or something like that.

I am shocked by your response, after all we are talking about the Highland Apartments.

The Rapid Station is on the W117th side of the street. So that could legitmately be referred to as the West 117th Street Station.

Detroit Ave. could revert to the Detroit Toll Road, or Old Toll Road. This would make the Nicholson House even more historic.

Let's see how you feel when Celveland announces windmills on W117.

It is for reason like this the Rockport Militia was formed.

Suggestion to Jim OB,

Jim, why not have a t-shirt and/or hoody or even a jacket proclaiming for the wearer, "I live in the Wood" that we can purchase, with the LO logo or something ?

It could also have "Lakewood" over the left breast pocket in smaller letters.

This thread caused me to think of this.

Ugh -

How 'bout one that proudly states "I live in (or love!!) Lakewood" instead of trying to be like our western neighbors with their cutsie nick names for their communities.

I always found the shortening of Rocky River to "river" and Bay Village to "Bay" to be ostentatious...

And I never think of my hometown that way... we are much better than that IMHO.

an intersting aside to that point...

I work in Beachwood. Interestingly enough the pinnacle of suburbia (ahem - cough - cough) does not call itself "beach" or the "wood" although as trendy as one must be to exist in that area you would think they'd be on the catchy nicknames like flies on... well... you know...

We have just added amazing LO Hoodies to the gear available, and much to Charyn's dismay we have "'Wood" stuff being produced as we speak. No fear Charyn, AGS and the Observer are still the only group allowed to sell items with "Lakewood's Logo" on it. All proceeds from thos are set aside for community groups and promotions.

Where I grew up "the wood" was collinwood.....or "the mother#$%%&* wood" was more like it.

I'm more of a lurker than active participant but could I put in a vote against that "Wood" thing too?

It doesn't sound cool, it sounds like someone "trying" to be cool. It removes one of the things that makes the city really special , the lake,too.

If you say Bay instead of Bay Village you ave two syllables If you say The Wood instead of Lakewood, it doesn't even save you a word.well, sorry for the rant. It will always be Lakewood to me.

I also think "the wood" is a terrible name for Lakewood that makes Lakewood sound low class, ghetto, or like it is a hip hop wannabee. Next thing you know someone will be selling shirts that say "Lakewood 216." Perhaps Moe's Hookups was already selling them before their early demise.

The first time I remember seeing "the wood" or "da wood" was a few years ago in Scene magazine in some McCarthy's ads that offered cheap-a@@ beer. Just my opinion - not trying to kick JOB while everyone else is piling on. "Lakewood" is a fairly short name with two syllables--it's not Philadelphia or Tegucigalpa.

Back to the Cleveland border encroachment: maybe Lakewood should
make a mock declaration of war (a la "Conch Republic") against Cleveland, surrender, then apply for funds to rebuild the border.

Or - a tug-of-war contest from each side of the avenue in question, between Mayors Jackson and George. Winner gets to name the street.
