We saw a beautiful wall of bamboo at a house located at approximately W110th and Edgewater. It was tall and provided a great screen. We were surprised as we didn't know that bamboo grew this far north. Does anyone know what type of bamboo this is and does it grow quickly as it does in the tropics? Is it hearty?

Bamboo
did you guys go to Linda Meglin' house? what I know about bamboo I have learned from her. there are two kinds...one kind you have to contain..it takes allot of effort to contain it...if you have a natural area like Linda does then you can just let it go..if it is surrounded my concrete. If you have to go thru allot of work to contain it.
There is another kind of bamboo that is less invasive..but it will still will run..especially into a sprinkler system or anything not deep underground.
I ordered some and put them in pots for the summer and the replanted them in the ground for the winter and lost them. they are not cheap to buy.
If you really want to try some and have a spot just ask Linda for a cutting and she will give you one...it will take off!!
If you want to find out where to buy..it might take me time to find out where I bought it from...let me know if you want me to and I will look.

You might want to talk with Steve Davis. I believe it was Steve that helped start the grove of climatized mahogany trees in his neighborhood. It would sound like this might be part of the same project to bring exotics to north of the WSL. There are rumors that they have Giant Pandas, and even Kola Bears that can live off the leaves found either in the grove or nearby.
It is starting to sound like the Island of Dr. Moreau!
Deb has some beans that we got from afriend in Florida that grow 8" a day in summer to a height of about 12' with leaves that look like tobacco leaves but are only 10" around. I have no idea what they are called but they are kind of cool.
