Mac OSX 10.4.8 Update
Just downloaded it to my iBook.
I checked the discussion on TUAW, and people are reporting large speed increases on their Macs.
I have it on my desktop and iBook now, and I have noticed some definite increases in speed.
If you have a Mac, I'd recommend this.

I'm going to try and turn this into a Lakewood thread somehow...
First, thanks for the heads up.
The Observer production is Mac-based.
There were 32,455 Mac based hits to the Observer Web world in September.
I wonder how many Mac-based businesses exist in Lakewood?

Isn't that like pouring Smuggler's Scotch into a Glenlivet bottle?
I can account for three Lakewood Businesses using Macs. On a larger scale BP America went Mac worldwide about 6 years ago.
The latest line of Macs from Cupertino are not only cheaper than Dells, they run faster, run PC software seamlessly, and still have no viruses.
Buy PC and run only PC, buy a Mac and run anything you want, cheaper, faster, smoother without fear.

Jim: I would never do that. I don't like scotch. I always fill the Knob Creek bottle I got from a trash bag with four roses.
Jeff

There ARE viruses for Macs, just a lot less of 'em.
Macs have been found to cost much less to own and operate than their PC counterparts. Examples:

That has been true since the 80s. One of the reasons BP switched was the amount of time it took a person to get up and running. When most thought of a Mac as a graphic toy, Microsoft had made their products transparent on both platforms. Once BP understood Excel ran as fast as on a PC, it became a no brainer.
But now they cost less too!

Video from Developers conference, the next system in January/February is staggering and very elegant. Some very interesting comparisons between platforms. With this system PC stuff is basically load and use. I would think this might help a person with a heavy investment in PC software give thought to switching.

When I was in Des Moines over Labor Day weekend, my fiancee & I went to the Apple Store. Curious about the Windows performance on the MacBooks, I tried one out.
I was impressed with the results. It seemed to run Windows faster than any Wintel machine I've seen.
Once I can afford it, I will own one. For now, I'll stick with my iBook and B&W G3.
I'm not surprised about the lower cost of ownership. Macs just work, with little intervention or tech support required.
