Home-based businesses

Post by Joan Roberts »

Mr. Os comment about home-based businesses and workers in another thread made me recall something.

During my last sojourn here, I recall there were VERY stringent restrictions on home based businesses in Lakewood. If your residence was zoned residential, you couldn't even have phone book listings or business cards without running afoul of the Powers That Be.

I understand why you wouldn't want to have a restaurant in the middle of the block, but this also extended to non-traffic-generating businesses like freelance creative, IT consulting, etc, businesses that were totally conducted via phone or computer.

Has that changed since last I was here?

Yes

Though I believe there are restrictions on type of business and number of employees.

the secret

The secret is to simply not get a business license or file tax information. Then they won't catch you for being in the wrong zone.

Right, then they'll only get you for failing to obtain a necessary license or tax evasion

At that point it is necessary to egg the licensing buildings, and then disappear.
