Interested Observers,

The Rules & Ordinances Committee of City Council will meet next Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 6 p.m. at City Hall to discuss, among other items, Councilman Demro's proposed ordinance which would impose new restrictions on registered sex offenders residing in Lakewood.

I am chair of the committee; Councilman FitzGerald is the other member. To my knowledge, no public discussion on the proposal has yet occurred.

Other agenda items involve a tall grass and weed ordinance, a broadening of our stalking ordinance and potential legislation regarding hand-held placards. You're welcome to attend.

Best wishes,

Kevin Butler
Councilman, Ward 1

Is anyone talking about an educational program of any kind?

Has the State of Ohio changed the law to allow landlords to legally evict sexual offenders if they live too close to schools?

Has Lakewood had any discussions with the County to discuss how ex-offenders are placed?

The Kiwanis Club of Rockport - Lakewood is planning on hosting an informational meeting in September. We are planning on having a child psychologist come talk about warning signs and proper education for children, a representative from the Police department to explain what they do to protect us and a representative from the County as well. We are hoping to work with other groups (PTA) to get the word out. I will provide more information as it comes together.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for additional speakers or topics...

BTW-Thank you Kevin for holding a meeting on the issue.

Kevin Butler had a great meeting last night and one of the topics was the new sex offender legislation. There was good progress made on it. Thank you Kevin and I look forward to hearing more about it!

Also - Is anyone interested in starting any block watch groups to educate the families in the area so they don't freak out and leave and also to let the sex offenders that the police are not the only ones watching?
