The building on the southwest corner of Westwood and Detroit Ave. experienced a big fire last night around 10-11pm. Flames were seen shooting out of an apartment window on the second floor above the storefronts. It looked to me that the fire also moved to the apartments on the third floor also.
The safety forces did their usual excellent job. They responded within minutes and cordoned off Detroit between the library and Rosewood.
I believe those are Section 8 rentals in that building.

Did you get photos? Or do you only take photos in Ireland?
Is this the new home of Rosewood Place?

Jim,
I only take pictures of Ireland.
The building is next to the vacant lot that the new development is planned to go up on.
The scuttlebut being passed around by the fire gawkers is that the building is owned by the same person that owns the lot and that he intended to renovate the building.
Perhaps this was phase one of the planned renovation.
Also, on second look it appears that it was some sort of office space that caught fire, not necessarily a Section 8 rental. I guess that was wishful thinking on my part.

This is the building east of (next to) where Rosewood is sited. The Rosewood developers also own that building (IIRC) and have big plans for restoration.
Looks like no-one was hurt, either civilians or firefighters, although it was really creepy to hear the oxygen detectors that firefighters wear squeaking.

The fire appears to have been concentrated on the 2nd floor, above Alto Capelli salon and Westshore Wireless. They have yellow fire tape around the sidewalk. There is still some debris on the sidewalk. After I walked past today, I saw the official Lakewood Observer vehicle racing down Detroit, perhaps on its way to the scene to take pictures. The vehicle was probably going slower than it appeared...those miniature cars look like they are going 100mph when they are only doing 35mph. The driver appeared to be wearing a Rolex diamond-studded Masterpiece--must have been JOB.
Further down Detroit, I see that Harry Buffalo is accepting dogs as patrons. A small white poodle was in the inside position of a booth near the Detroit entrance. Do they serve bison-flavored Milk Bones?
