For anyone who works downtown, this just hit my in-box.....
Attention Car-Free Clevelanders who travel by bike (or those who would like to)....
This Friday, February 3, ClevelandBikes will be sponsoring a winter "Bike to Work Day", and Car-Free in Cleveland will be participating. Come out and enjoy the not-so-wintry winter we're having by cycling downtown with us Friday morning!
Pick a starting location from the list below and ride along with a ClevelandBikes ride leader, or just meet us at 8:15 AM at the downtown destination, which will be at A. J. Rocco's Espresso Bar, located near the corner of Prospect and Huron. They'll be providing free coffee and bagels.
From the East Side:
Phoenix in Lakewood at 15108 Detroit near Warren Rd. 7:25 AM
Arabica in Lakewood at 11604 Detroit near W. 116th 7:50 AM
Talkies Film and Coffee Bar in Ohio City at 2521 Market Ave. 7:50 AM
Civilization coffee shop in Tremont at W. 11th and Kenilworth 7:45 AM
I work in Middleburg Heights and I commute by bike as often as possible (which lately has been almost every day). I don't know if I will take some extra time to join in on Friday. Maybe if I can get a couple takers from the forum.....
I’ll sweeten the deal. Meet me at my house (7:00 AM sharp, very western Lakewood) and I’ll provide a bike. I have three bikes that I ride myself and you can use any of them. The one I’m on now is a mid 80’s hybrid with big tires and a flat (upright) handlebar. You’ll probably want that one and that’s fine. The second is a brand new commuter; it has drop bars that I really like because there are several places you can put your hands so you don’t get so stiff. The third is my 1971 Gitane ten-speed racer that I’ll ride if perchance there are two takers. If you’re under 5’ 9†I have two others you can use. Whatever one you want will have lights and panniers (saddlebags) for your stuff. Better yet just leave your briefcase in the office tomorrow night so you’ll have it on Friday. Can you ride back yourself? If not I’ll come back and ride with you! That will be a 40-mile day, my first in thevicinity of downtown.
Friday’s weather as of now is supposed to be warmish (for the winter) and probably dry (I hope). Think layers and no cotton. I have extra headwear and an extra helmet depending on your size.
I’ve not done a carfree Cleveland ride either so we both can meet new people And you can claim to be doing something about our “addiction to oilâ€Â. Let me know though by tomorrow afternoon so I can be sure I/we have everything ready. IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO READY YOURSELF FOR A WORLD WITHOUT CHEAP GASOLINE and I will help anyone who wants to prepare, now or whenever. And if you don’t work downtown and just wanna ride, that’s what I’m doing. When the free bagels and coffee are done I’m headed straight back to Lakewood.
Like I said we can figure it out. So “let’s roll!â€Â……
I really like this idea and wish I could participate but too much of my job has me driving from one home visit to another. They just aren't spaced out enough to include bike time. I am trying to get closer to this by trying to pick up a caseload of Lakewood folks who get MR/DD services (which there are a lot, actually). Sadly they are all taken right now but if one opens up, I am grabbing it. This will allow me a lot of chances to bike to work and if I have to drive, it isn't very far or for very long. Crossing fingers. Thanks for offer, though!

You build those teeny cars? I am intrigued by that Smartcar thing, though I doubt it will lug my tall frame around. You selling any of them next year (we just bought the exact opposite of gas friendly...got the family minivan for our growing brood)?
