from Councilman Tom Bullock's Neighborhood Notes:

Lights Out Lakewood! – It’s time to celebrate Earth Hour.

On Saturday, March, 26th at 8:30 pm, the City of Lakewood will be participate in “Earth Hour”. This is an hour of our year devoted to turning off as many lights, appliances and anything else electrical possible. Keep Lakewood Beautiful, in conjunction with the City and other groups, is promoting the event.

Our goal is 200 households to participate, but it is really about much more than that. Given the drive of Lakewood residents, it is anticipated that this goal will be rather easy to accomplish. The challenge will be looking “beyond the hour” to find ways to conserve energy going forward. The results of one hour’s energy savings are miniscule compared to what can happen if we all make a concerted effort to be more energy conscious.

This was more publicized last year. This is the first I've heard of it this year. Thanks for spreading the word. I hope it's not too late.

I was proud of my kids tonight, my husband and I were out for our anniversary but apparently my 14 year old reminded them that it was earth hour and at 8:30 they turned everything off. Apparently they played games and did puzzle books. I'll have to remember next time and follow their lead. So what did those of you who observed do tonight?

We lit a bunch of candles and then flipped the breaker at 8:30. Didn't do much but have good conversation, so much so, we didn't realize the hour was up haha.

Well a good conversation can go on for hours while it only seems like moments, so not noticing the time doesn't surprise me. Glad you had a good night.

So true and thanks.

And I think an anniversary is a good reason to celebrate so don't feel too bad. :) Hope you went somewhere great to eat!

Thanks to you too. As for dinner we went to El Tango, the food was fantastic (plus we have leftovers) and the service was wonderful. All in all a good night, although I was a little freaked out when I got a text from my son asking where the lighter was.

I do think if nothing else events like Earth Hour are good because they give people a reason to step back and enjoy the simple things in life. In this fast paced world that's a good thing to do every now and then.
