Re: We Are All African - Richard Dawkins
it is sort of a nonsensical question to ask whether islam is a religion of peace.
it is like asking whether Christianity is a religion of peace.
most of Christian history is of Christian feudal lords warring against christian feudal lords. and all their vassals and peasants and conscripts and mercenaries. Even before the protestant schism. something always comes up.
if the entire world was Christian, it would soon develop into christians warring on christians. something always comes up. it took the communist vietnamise to oust the Khmer Rouge. it did not take them long. once america got out of the way. something always comes up.
america's own first three wars were against christian allies. the british allies, who most of our trade was with and shared the same general religion and language. the "quasi-war" against the french who had bankrolled much of our revolution against britain. and the war of 1812 against britain: who still had most of our trade, language, and religion. something always comes up.
the biggest human instinct is to get revved up being part of a team that is trying to kick the shit out of somebody. something always comes up.

Well put Ryan.
If your going to question another religions level of violence, review your own first. Let's remember who brought us the Inquisition. That would be the Pope. He was really pissed off with Luther for breaking away from his church. (Among other things.) Even though the Pope had a little problem with corruption. O.K. a big problem.
Galileo wasn't treated too well by the Pope either.
Change is tough for lots of people. I think lots of violence is caused by someone looking for power or trying to maintain it. It seems to be the story of civilization. Where is the civil in civilization?

I am wondering if Santa Claus is an elf or some kind of human wizard.
This is the kind of debate that can start wars.
