This post was intended to be in the Lakewood discussion forum as it is a very relevant topic to the city of Lakewood. I would like it moved back or removed please.

Sorry Ed, I did not see the Lakewood angle. I suppose we could debate the merits of such harsh dog laws here in Lakewood. Like the one where there not allowed in parks?!?

Jim-- the Lakewood angle goes all the way back to the pit bull ordinances. The Toledo law is what most sensible people had proposed at the time. But, some sort of weird obstinacy on council prevailed and ignored common sense legislating.
It would do Lakewood good to visit this Toledo ordinance with an eye to changing Lakewood's laws to make every day sense.
If a dog bites you, it's the fault of the owner and the dog. Doesn't matter if it's Lassie or a Mike Vick pup.

It's nice to see their new law includes some standards for treatment of dogs.
The logic behind the change is that many breeds besides “pit bulls” can be dangerous, and not all “pit bulls” should be considered dangerous.
Huh, imagine that. Maybe someone in Toledo, unlike in Lakewood, finally did some research and listened to experts' opinions instead of using media hype to prey on mothers' fears so they can put "committed to public safety" and "fighting to keep our children safe" on their campaign fliers.
