So, I saw this past Thursday in the Sun Post-Herald (or whatever its called now) that people can actually send in cover letters and resumes in for the potentially vacant mayoral and council positions.

I'm giving some serious thought to sending my info in. Anyone else thinking about it??

Well Roy we have been talking about it here for months.

Everyone should send in. Maybe we could string the selection process out till next November
and thereby not need to appoint anyone.

YES YOU SHOULD SUBMIT AN APPLICATION. Maybe you aren't sure if you are up to it or can dedicate the time needed to it. Just going through the process will likely clear things up for you. Even if you aren't appointed for Jan 1st. Elections in November is another great opportunity that you will be more prepared for.

I don't know you, but I'm guessing like many citizens, you have what it takes to serve on our City Council.

What does it take to serve on Council? You don't have to have any special degree or impressive professional background. That's what we pay the people at City Hall for. Let them do all that kind of work and report to you and the public. In my love for civic volunteer work, I have extensive experience with both working with Council people and many Directors on staff at City Hall. All that I have worked with I look up to them all and am thankful they are here. In my opinion, the right character for public service is just as hard to find these days.

What does it take to serve on Lakewood Council? I can keep it simple.

1. Love for serving others, all others, no matter how different they are from you.
2. Lots of time. You will attend lots of meetings and spend tons of time taking and fielding constituents calls/emails/concerns.
3. Experience doing any Lakewood civic projects, such as committee work or volunteer service and relative knowledge of Lakewood and its issues.
3. And it would be good to know that you are good enough with numbers and disciplined enough with money in your own life.
4. Good mental and physical health. Without it you won't be able to serve others very well.
5. Being comfortable with the fact that you should listen more than you are to speak.

I'd love to learn about others like you that are looking to get appointed or run for election next year. Since, as much as I would love to be able to step up for a Council position, it is not my time for it. But I want to offer my encouragement and support to new faces wanting to step up and serve Lakewood for the elections next year.

I am an out and out totally partisan Lakewoodite. But what good is that without a worthy opponent?

The possibility of several openings in Lakewood's government in the next few months present a unique opportunity for a quick entry of new people to hold office in Lakewood.

Mel Page has done a great job in outlining the real, true qualifications of an officeholder. She points out the human, non political requirements for holding office.

I can tell you, whomever is reading this and has that voracious civic energy that Mel has described, that from my 40 years as a Lakewood political activist, that there is a place - a need for you to serve in Lakewood government.

Apply ---- send in your application for the upcoming openings. Further more, post those applications here on the Deck. Let's see whatcha got!

If you don't make it through the selection process -- here's a tip from a political strategist: make that application and its posting on the Deck your first opening campaign salvo for this upcoming local elections.

Every idea, issue, proposal put forward by a candidate in an election enriches the whole community.

So you, out there, you know who you are!!!!!!!!! You've thought about it!!! Do it!!!!

Ha! Your sense of humor alone makes me want to say yes to that remark! That cracked me up. Sense of humor is also a nice attribute for any candidate, I say.

Your comment caused me to dust off my old Sim City 2000. I've had several successful cities over the years. After playing a little, I now realize that this game doesn't present an accurate picture of modern politics.

Not only that, but I think we'd get another visit from 60 Minutes if a neighborhood was bulldozed to make a space for a giant Mayor's Mansion like in the game.
