What do we do with the kids for the summer? Lots of things here for younger kids.

What do we do with the teens.

Yesterday, I almost hit a kid on a skateboard. The light turned green, no one at the crosswalks and the signs for the crosswalks we're no to pedestrians. A kid came peeling around the corner, boarded through the green light. I saw him and stopped in time, but he barreled right past a car on the other side that had started through the intersection. I of course,
screamed at him and he kept going.

I know we have to skateboard park but how can we make sure that kids abide by traffic laws.

Still no outdoor hoops here, no roller rink, laser tag? More jobs for kids and a local jobs for teens program.

I saw a friends teen yesterday, so high that he was knocking off of the parking meters. Maybe that's one of the only available recreations here for teens. Cue Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Year-round school...I'd vote for that.

I grew up in a district that was year round. I loved it. There was minimal repetition after summer vacation. And our summer vacation was long enough to have fun and go on trips but not so long as to be horrible bored and lose a lot of what we learned in the classroom.

Year round might also be a good option if we go down to six overcrowded elementary schools. In a multi track year round system there is always one group of students on break while the other three groups are in school. It seemed to work quite well in my district but I truly doubt that year round schooling either on a non-track or track system would ever happen here. It does take some forward thinking and for many change is scary.

Anyhow back on topic. My two oldest boys do get bored during summer break. Luckily for my oldest there is soccer conditioning and he'll have rock on and classical string camp next week. My second oldest spend a lot of time at the skatepark but he says even that gets boring. Other than that my boys ride their bikes or skateboards around town and hang out with friends. There really isn't a lot to do. Not sure though what to do about that I remember being a teen and all we really did was hang out. I know many adults worry that teens are up to no good when they are hanging around places. But really they are doing what teens do hang out and talk to their friends.
