Parents of students already registered will be automatically enrolled for the extended day option without having to do any additional paperwork.

The half day morning kindergarten program will also be available in every elementary school. If you would like your child to attend in the morning only, and have not already indicated that when you registered, please let us know by calling 216-529-4203.

All of the required state standards for kindergarten are taught in the morning session. Students attending for the half day period will have completed the required kindergarten program by the end of the school year. The extended day program allows teachers to offer additional activities to enhance and enrich learning. Students who choose the half day option will attend the morning session with those who stay all day.

We are grateful that we are able to provide both of these learning options to our students thanks to the support of the Lakewood community.

If you have questions, please call 216-529-4203.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the info. Can you tell us how much this program costs the District?

Thanks.

I'm asking because before the levy vote,we weren't told that Extended Kindergarten was possibly on the chopping block, though we were told that many programs were threatened.

I want to know the cost of this, because if passage of the levy made this possible, would it also be possible to bring back the Gifted and Talented program for Second Graders next year?

Thank you.

Matt,

I am glad to know that the kindergarten program will stay as it is. All day kindergarten is appealing to parents, especially full-time working parents, who are faced with many excellent school choices in our area. By continuing to provide an all-day kindergarten program Lakewood Schools stays competitive and will continue to draw families to our city.

Thanks for the information.

Kristine

Just to be clear, the extended day option involves the SCHOOL-day (till 2:30'ish) and not an entire day in general.

I wouldn't want a first time working parent of a five year old out there to think that their little one can be enrolled in a Lakewood kindergarten program for free until the end of the work day.

David,

Quite right. At Grant the day is from 9am-3:07pm (doors in the morning open at 8:45am). Not all of our elementary schools open their doors at the same time.

However, I would think that for most parents it is easier to have their kids in one spot all day then to have to leave work to pick them up and then drop them off to a babysitter/caregiver. It is also easier to get a job/keep a job when kids are in school. This is particularly true for moms who want or need to go back to work to help support their family.
