Lock your doors

The other day I had my iphone stolen out of my unlocked car, which was parked in my driveway overnight. I know ... I never should have left it there in the first place. And I know ... I should have locked my car door. (I usually take the phone in with me, and I usually lock the car door but things just didn't work out in my favor that night).
I thought I'd post, however, because I figured we can all probably use a reminder to lock our cars overnight - even if they are in our driveways. There was another theft on my street the same night - also an unlocked car.
When I talked to the police about it they said this is pretty common, and it's not just a Lakewood thing. It's happening frequently in every city. There are people who walk around every night and just see what cars they can open. Some people who have been caught before, usually teenagers between 14 and 19 (according to the detective I talked to) said they usually just sell the items to their friends or try to trade things (CDs and music) at The Exchange. That makes getting the items back incredibly unlikely.
I think Lakewood is a wonderful community and generally a safe one. I don't often hear about windows getting smashed in or doors being pried open on vehicles. But it's incredibly easy to just check a car door to see if it's open, and that sort of crime is 100% preventable. While I know that I will probably never see my iphone again (*gasp*) I thought that by posting, I might be able to prevent someone else from going through the same thing. Please lock up each night.
