Republican Candidate Night October 6th

Post by Ryan Salo »

The Lakewood Republican Organization is hosting our Candidates Night meeting next Tuesday night at 7:00pm at the main branch of the Lakewood Public Library, in the main auditorium in the basement. Jared Shapiro and Ryan Demro will be speaking about their campaigns and their goals. They will take questions from the audience. We will also be discussing the 6 issues that will be on the ballot.

Free refreshments will be served.

I have also attached a sample ballot from the board of election so you can have a chance to read through it.

Call me at 216-288-9163 with any questions.

Thanks,

Thank you for the invitation. I am a proud independent, am I invited? Do you know why I have not seen anything similar from the democrats in this city? It seems that no one I have spoken too even knows who Monique Smith is, yet she nearly won the election!!! Where are the politicians and elected officials in these discussions? Will there be a debate?

Ken,

All are welcome to come. It is open to the public. I had asked Tom Bullock if he wanted to have a joint candidate's night. He was interested and even suggested a social event after, but I guess the other candidates didn't want to participate. I can completely understand that, they don't want to give Demro and Shapiro an audience.

In my opinion, Monique Smith is similar to Tom Bullock. A somewhat new face that hurries to get involved and build a resume and then has the backing of influential people in the city. The Mayor has done a great job at building a team and he is looking to expand it. In this county you need a strong team to move up the ladder. I just hope that Lakewood doesn't become just a stepping stone for peoples political aspirations.

Qualifications do not really mean much anymore, to an extent. Voters typically do what they are told by the party or organization that are part of. Whoever has a larger organization can really get anyone elected if they get the word out.

Bottom line, I hope that you do come and ask these candidates tough questions. I encourage anyone to come that wants to know what these guys stand for rather than just make assumptions.

See you Tuesday!

I would be happy to help host another one if the Dem's agree to participate with us. I doubt that will happen, if you are in the lead you don't want to open yourself up to potential failure. It is easier to simply hide behind your full color mail pieces that are prepared for you in advance. :)

I hope that I am wrong. It would be a good event for the city.

Thank you for the quick response! It is refreshing. It seems from what I see and read that this city rewards those unwilling to talk or think in public! Where has this country gone, when politicians and "influential people in the city" run from public discourse, instead of into it. I will be there, if for no other reasons than to hear what their platforms are, and to reward them for the efforts. After the last 8 years, I find it hard to pull the lever for a republican, on a local level parties should mean less and party politics benefit no one but a few.

Thank you again!

I would also like to suggest that the Republican candidates also sign on to the area on the Deck where they answer question by Observers. The Lakewood Observer has given candidates all the space they have asked for, now it would be nice for them to give some time to the members of the Lakewood Observer. Jim Devito has created a section where ALL candidates can answer questions without "fear" of more questions or attacks.

Please PM me your questions and they will be asked at the meeting. If I can finalize the details I plan on recording the speeches as well as Q&A, and making them available online.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Jim,

I would be happy to participate if other candidates would join. Right now they intend to use it as a trap. I will answer all the questions and people like Monique Who? will sit idly by and look for opportunities for the Mayor to attack me on their behalf as he did in a recent piece. Sorry, not playing that game. Lakewood deserves better, they should demand that all candidates participate.

I agree, as you know the Lakewood Observer has always been open to working
with candidates, and trying to keep things fair. When they published their guide
without editing, we had hoped that some mutual respect and trust had been
achieved between the politicians, and the community owned and written newspaper.

As you well remember from your last time in office, when the Deck was put up,it
was after speaking with everyone on council, the school board, and other groups.
The single thing they promised was if we did real names, they would participate.

While you and I do not always agree, I have to respect your willingness to answer questions
and talk with your constituents.

When you see the rest of the people running from office you might mention there are some
questions here on the Deck asked by VOTERS, they might want to answer.

As far as the mayor. He is one of the politicians that actually use the Deck to his
andLakewood's advatage
He reads the threads, gathers the questions, then posts clean concise answers. The way
he handled the "Garbage Thread" has become text book when I speak with other civic
leaders in other cities. Study the comments, develop clear truthful answers.

While others have been text book on how not to do it. Come avoid the truth, insult those
asking the questions, then run and hide behind their facebook pulpit of spin and non-
accountability.

The point I make is that not answering questions to the residents and voters on the deck
is like failing a take home test. As a teacher I am sure you understand the metaphor.

With all of that said, I am not sure how answering the questions is a"trap."

As always, thank you for wading into the mosh pit of word jazz.
