end of the road

Rising Diesel prices are putting a lot of owner-op truck drivers out of business. Owner Operators make up 9 percent of the 3.4 million truck drivers in America. Along with electricians, plumbers, masons, miners, barbers, steel workers, farmers, mechanics, and railway workers, Truck Drivers are the most important Americans.
On one hand, there will probably be a massive shift in the quantity and types of cargo shipped in the post-peak oil slide. The Generation Y folks will have to keep the same video game consoles a few more years before upgrading. on the other, Owner Ops should be paying the same for diesel as the big corporate guys: assuming shipping rates go up for all of them, there should be little difference in profitability.
