more than 1 in ever 100 American adults were in jail or prison at the start of 2008.

2,319,258 Adults were in prison or jail at the start of the year. That is over 2 million!
I was visiting some of my wealthier friends last month. One of them had even voted for Bush twice, but now he's totally off the Republican bandwagon. They had a cable tv set to some reality show channel. most of the programs were like COPs and rescue 9/11. This particular episode was very interesting. It was a series of sting operations. Some guy would show up and buy ten dollars of Marijuana. As he walked away he would get tackled to the ground by 1 or 2 police officers. These were awesome high speed tackles!
I don't know how much safer society is with those guys off the street. Police power is limited. Is this the best use of a limited resource? These don't sound like the kind of cops Dick Feagler's Grandpa was.
What would Sheriff Andy Taylor do? He probably would have tried talking them out of buying an illegal substance, not encouraged them to buy it just so he could arrest them. And if someone was drunk he would let them sleep in the town jail at night. He never even arrested those effed up mountain folk that occasionally ambled into town!
